Folio. 11.5 x 15.5 in. [87 leaves (unnumbered).], 87 chromolithograph plates for title and flags throughout, all mounted on linen hinges as issued. Brown pebbled publisher's cloth, gilt lettering front cover, decorated endpapers (front inner hinge starting, very faint tidemark & bubbling to cloth of fore-edges of front cover, minor wear & bumping to corners), still a VG bright copy, w/ plates quite sharp. First edition of this lavish work reproducing the flags carried by U.S. Army infantry, cavalry, and artillery units during the Civil War featuring headquarters flags, battle flags, corps flags, pennants, and guidons. Following the Civil War both Sherman and Sheridan attempted to regularize unit flags, and recommended that battle names be omitted from the flag and unit registers. This work compiled by US Army Brig. Gen. Holabird (1826-1907), was carried out towards the end of his service as Quartermaster which ended June 16, 1890. William Burk (ca. 1857-1905) and John McFetridge (1844-1903) launched their company in 1877 by purchasing William Harding's printing house, and specialized in chromolithographic trade cards, advertising, book illustrations, calendars, and other material until about 1900.

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, of this technical guide to the ensign, rank flags, and other naval colours of Chiang Kai-Shek's government, with each illustration faced by a diagram detailing the design's precise ratios and colours. WorldCat records only the University of Chicago's copy of a later edition published in 1939. Besides the flags of the Kuomintang and the Republic of China, the present work covers those of the President, senior executive officials, flag ranks, and specialized ships such as customs, water police, and salt administration vessels. Provenance: in the characteristic contemporary binding of the German Bibliothek des Auswärtigen Amtes (Library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) with its stamp embossed on the front board and accession annotations on the cloth backstrip and the front wrapper. A 40 x 40 mm hole has been left on the front wrapper where a stamp, likely the library's, has sometime been excised. Folio (381 x 282 mm), ff. [ii, 18]. With 18 large colour illustrations of flags, each faced by an explanatory diagram. Contemporary brown cloth-backed marbled boards, original card wrappers bound in. Binding study and moderately worn overall, more so at extremities, tips and corners of pages bumped, contents bright with some offsetting. A very good copy indeed.
