Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Due to increased awareness of the AIDS crisis as well as concern about environmental chemicals, immunotoxicology has quickly become one of the most important and controversial topics in occupational medicine and toxicology. This insightful reference/text clarifies the subject by exploring the basic environmental, occupational, and therapeutic agents that can suppress or strengthen the immune system. The authors provide a necessary bridge between immunology and toxicology to explain the various products and processes that may change immune parameters, affect host resistance to infections and tumors, and alter a system's future reaction to exposure. They assess the damage done not only to the immune system, but also damage by the immune system as a result of altered functioning. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on the relevance to existing clinical health and possible future adverse effects. Even the more common immunotoxic conditions, such as food and drug intolerance, cigarette smoking, and occupational asthma, are put into perspective, with straightforward information on possible genetic, environmental, and pharmacological risk factors. Detailed sections are included on: Organ systems and target cells most often affectedTypes of damage and injury resulting from immunotoxic reactionsClinical populations in which immune system damage occursMethods for investigating the etiology of agents and risk assessmentRelevance of laboratory data to human riskStrategies for achieving standard practices to prevent the disparity in results that characterizes many immune system studiesRegulatory affairs related to immunotoxicology Laboratory and experimental findings are probed to determine how and to what degree different immunotoxicants have induced clinical disease. Citations of animal research are restricted to those studies that point the way for future human studies, or have direct relevance to human situations. To further the reader's understanding of xenobiotics, the authors treat the subject of purposeful immunomodulation, achieved by administering immunosuppressive or immunopotentiating drugs. Despite increasing public awareness, there remains an inaccurate perception of what chemicals can and cannot do. This important reference sets the record straight, making it an essential source for toxicologists, immunologists, industrial hygienists, microbiologists, allergists, as well as all professionals in the agricultural and cosmetic industries, and those involved in chemical and biological regulation.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. Small quarto. Quarter cloth and papercovered boards with printed label. Modest stains on the spine, some light tidemarks on the front board and on the edge of the first couple of leaves, else a sound good or better copy lacking the dust jacket, but with all plates and maps present. Inscribed by Robert J. Flaherty to the film director, screenwriter, and producer Paul Bern: "To Paul Bern with the good wishes of the author, Robert Flaherty. New York City. Jan. 4th, 1927." Bern was Irving Thalberg's personal assistant and considered one of the great talents in Hollywood, but his fate was unfortunate, related by Kenneth Anger in his scandalous book *Hollywood Babylon*. Bern died by his own hand just two months after marrying the Hollywood bombshell Jean Harlow. Anger attributed Bern's suicide to his impotence, but others surmised he was murdered by an abandoned common-in-law wife, with the studio covering up the scandal to protect their biggest star. This book documents several of Flaherty's trips to the Hudson Bay area, which were the basis for the ultra-influential 1922 film *Nanook of The North*, generally regarded as the first feature-length documentary. Bern had an extensive library; many of his books fell into the possession of his friend and fellow MGM producer Carey Wilson, from whose estate this came. A terrific association connecting two important early Hollywood figures.

With a mimeo label snipe affixed to the verso, along with the stamps of National Film Archive library. From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. Based on Rudyard Kipling's story "Toomai of the Elephants," which originally appeared in Kipling's 1895 collection "The Jungle Book." A young Indian boy helps guide his father and a government elephant hunter to the secret elephant camp in the jungle. A breakthrough role for Sabu, who would go on to work under exclusive contract for film mogul Alexander Korda in "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940), "Arabian Nights" (1942), and "The Jungle Book" (1942). Set in colonial India, shot on location in Gwynedd, Wales. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus overall.
