Contact seller5-star selleroblong 12mo. quarter cloth & paper printed with reduced wood engravings first cut for the Battle of Hastings series by David Gentleman in 1966. unpaginated. Limited to 330 copies, of which 280 were available for sale. A fine copy. ".probably the last letterpress book printed at the Fleece Press." -Colophone Contains about 75 ori…ginal stamps designed by David Gentleman. The tipped-in photos were printed by Ian Wright Creative. The type is 8 pt Monotype Baskerville, set by Nick Gill at Effra Press & Typefoundry. Bound by the Fine Book Bindery. From the artist's website: "Brian Webbs survey of David Gentlemans 103 pioneering postage stamp designs, reaching back to the early 1960s, forms a new letterpress book from the Fleece Press. Each copy will feature 79 tipped-in stamps. Coinciding with a current decline in the quality of stamp design and the introduction of barcoded stamps, this book will be a gallery of some of the best British philatelic designs. This fitting record of Davids achievement, including a good number of stamps first created on the boxwood block, is a book very carefully planned: the 29,000 stamps have been bought in tiny quantities here and there over several years, and every issue is represented. The text is set in 8 point Baskerville, and bound in quarter imitation vellum with printed paper over the boards." quarter cloth & paper printed with reduced wood engravings first cut for the Battle of Hastings series by David Gentleman in 1966.
