Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. 8vo., xii, 413 pages, partly uncut, some light browning to extreme outer margins unaffecting the text in anyway, top edges blocked in gilt, fine gilt ornate decoration to inner gilt dentelles. bound in fine quality blue morocco, matching gilt ruled outer borders with fine matching gilt ornate decoration to both front and rear covers, gilt decorated spine in compartments with raised bands, with a floral design within each compartment, together with gilt title. A VG+ tightly bound copy in a most handsome binding. One of 2,000 copies printed in 'Florence' type on fine antique laid paper. Founded in 1908 by the London publishers Chatto & Windus and operated by Philip Lee Warner, the Florence Press had as its expressed intention the production of "beautiful books in the choicest types," but in somewhat larger and less costly editions than Kelmscott and the other more celebrated English fine presses. Florence books are readily distinguishable by their special type, designed by Herbert P. Horne after 15th century Italian faces that are elegant, simple, and easily readable. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 1822) was an English writer who is considered one of the major English Romantic poets. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views, Shelley did not achieve fame during his lifetime, but recognition of his achievements in poetry grew steadily following his death, and he became an important influence on subsequent generations of poets, including Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Thomas Hardy, and W. B. Yeats. American literary critic Harold Bloom describes him as "a superb craftsman, a lyric poet without rival, and surely one of the most advanced sceptical intellects ever to write a poem.".

3 vols. 8vo. Second edition. Second edition. 3 vols. 8vo. From the library of Sir Percy Florence Shelley (1819-1889), the only surviving child of Percy and Mary Shelley. Sir Percy, who inherited the family baronetcy in 1844 on the death of his grandfather, also inherited his father's papers on the death of Mary Shelley; he and his wife, Jane, Lady Shelley, created at Boscombe Manor something of a shrine to the poet's memory and had much to do with shaping the Victorian cult and myth of Shelley. Margaret Shelley (1801-1887), who owned this copy prior to her nephew, was one of the poet's four younger sisters. The book combines two novels by Griffin, issued together for this second edition, the year after their first appearance. Provenance: Margaret Shelley (ownership signature to titles dated 1839); Percy Florence Shelley (bookplate in each volume) Near contemporary half-calf and marbled boards. Covers detached, spines perished.
