(wiki) // During the last ten years, research on non-verbal communication in antiquity has developed into a kind of trendy occupation. A number of classicists have focused on the role of gestures, facial expression and voice in the context of rhetoric, drama, physiognomy and art. With regard to the more theoretical aspects of non-verbal communication, as discussed by ancient authors, it has been possible to demonstrate that they base their reflexions mainly upon four criteria (Fögen 2001): first, hypotheses on the origin of language; second, considerations about the first-language acquisition of the child; third, remarks on the problem of foreign languages and, connected with this, the view of gesture and facial expression as a universal language of all human beings; and fourth, the development and elaboration of theories of rhetoric concerning the skilful use of non-verbal elements in public speech. As far as I can see, there is one area which has been overlooked so far in most scholarly discussions, and that is the role of non-verbal elements in ancient medical texts. It is the aim of my contribution to have a closer look at some passages from Greek and Roman medical texts which describe ways of communicating. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Research on language attitudes goes back to the 1960s. It is remarkable, however, that an interdisciplinary exchange of sociolinguistics with its neighbouring disciplines like social psychology and sociology is only noticeable within the last decade. The twelve contributions to this volume, all presented at an international conference held in Heidelberg, are designed to stimulate and widen the scientific debate.

Hardback. Condition: New. The seventeen contributions to this volume, written by leading experts, show that animals and humans in Graeco-Roman antiquity are interconnected on a variety of different levels and that their encounters and interactions often result from their belonging to the same structures, 'networks' and communities or at least from finding themselves together in a certain setting, context or environment - wittingly or unwittingly. Papers explore the concrete categories of interaction between animals and humans that can be identified, in what contexts they occur, and what types of evidence can be productively used to examine the concept of interactions. Articles in this volume take into account literary, visual, and other types of evidence. A comprehensive research bibliography is also provided.
