Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the early poetic works of the Reverend Henry Martin Foot, a 19th century clergyman, and professor of English and philosophy in the newly-founded South African College. Foot's writings capture both his initial disappointment with the Cape Colony and his growing love for his adopted country, with themes of love, loss, faith, and the search for one's place in the world woven throughout. Foot's work demonstrates the influence of the Romantic movement, with poems containing many familiar elements including reflections on nature and mortality, and a deep exploration of the human soul and emotion. His work also demonstrates his deep Christian faith and a strong sense of social justice. This collection is sure to appeal to readers interested in early South African literature, the history of the Cape Colony, and the interplay of faith, identity, and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
