Add to basketBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1634, John Lord Balmerino stood accused of retaining and annotating a petition critical of Charles I's liturgical impositions, a document never published, but shared privately among dissenting peers. Though the petition was intended for the King, it was intercepted before presentation, and Balmerino's possession of a copy, interlined in his own hand, was construed as libel. Tried in Edinburgh before a jury shaped by episcopal influence, he was convicted by a single vote and sentenced to death. Yet the charge, "leasing-making" or sowing discord between monarch and subject, and the trial's irregularities drew elite sympathy. Balmerino was pardoned but confined, later emerging as a leading Covenanter. The case exposed the fragility of justice under royal pressure and foreshadowed Scotland's resistance to Charles's liturgical impositions. 61 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery.
