First editions, first impressions, with first separate edition of 'Flying Colours', first & fourth vols signed by the author; 12 vols, 8vo; minor offsetting to endpapers, else unmarked internally; publisher's first issue cloth in various colours, titles to spines white, silver, or gilt, ghosting through the jacket to the spine of 'A Ship of the Line', some spotting to edges of first few vols, all in original unclipped first issue pictorial dustjackets, 'Flying Colours' with some chipping to head and foot of spine panel (costing some lettering), minor chipping and edge-wear elsewhere, nonetheless an excellent set. A superb set of the complete Hornblower novels in their original unclipped dustjackets, seldom found thus. The set includes The Happy Return signed by the author on the half-title, and the first separate edition of Flying Colours, published one day after Flying Colours including A Ship of the Line, signed by the author on the title page. The final volume, Hornblower and the Crisis, comprises the last, unfinished novel and two short stories appearing in book form for the first time. There were a further three short stories published in Argosy from March to May 1941 which do not appear in book form. The Happy Return, A Ship of the Line, and Flying Colours are elusive in jacket.

First American edition of this classic maritime adventure novel that showcases themes of duty, resilience, and individual impact during wartime. Octavo, original publisher's full cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper, "Marjorie From C.S. Forester." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed. āSingle-Handed, originally published as Brown on Resolution in 1929 by C.S. Forester, is a maritime adventure novel that showcases themes of duty, resilience, and individual impact during wartime. The narrative follows Leading Seaman Albert Brown, who, after his ship is sunk during World War I, finds himself stranded on a desolate Pacific island. Despite being isolated and outnumbered, Brown engages in guerrilla tactics against a German warship anchored nearby, aiming to delay its repairs and prevent it from threatening Allied forces. His relentless solo efforts exemplify personal heroism and the profound influence a single determined individual can have on larger military operations. This work is considered a precursor to Forester's later Horatio Hornblower series, reflecting his deep engagement with naval warfare and character-driven storytelling.

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. [Modern Literature] INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION, SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.320. Publisher's black cloth, silver titles to spine, pictorial dust-jacket designed by Biro, with printed price 10s 6d. With author's inscription to flyleaf: 'To Sir William and Lady Tennant /with best wishes from / C.S.Forester.' Later bookplate to pastedown, jacket lightly handled and marked. Near fine. A particularly fine association; the recipient Admiral Sir William Tennant (1890-1963) was a veteran of the Great War and a true war hero. He survived two significant naval losses, firstly the sinking of the cruiser Nottingham in the action of 19 August 1916, and secondly as Captain of HMS Repulse, torpedoed in the South China Sea two days after the Pearl Harbour attacks. He engaged in and oversaw the successful evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk; as senior naval officer ashore he corralled troops and patrolled the beaches with a megaphone calling for allied stragglers, staying to the last. For his actions he was knighted on 2nd June 1940. In the 2017 Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, the character of Commander Bolton, played by Kenneth Branagh, draws on the accomplishments of [the then] Captain Tennant. Author C.S. Forester wrote extensively about the Royal Navy, including fiction and naval history, and several volumes of short stories set during the Second World War. Signed.
