L'A., Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) partecipo' dal 1761 al 1767 a una spedizione scientifica danese sotto il patrocinio del re Federico V, durante la quale, dopo essere stato in Egitto, presso le cateratte del Nilo, raggiunse l'Arabia esplorando alcune zone sconosciute dello Yemen. La première édition allemande paraît à Copenhague en 1772, puis une édition française suit en 1773 sous le titre Description de l'Arabie. L'expédition danoise, patronnée par le roi Frédéric V, devait réunir des observations scientifiques sur l'Arabie et les régions voisines, avec un programme très ambitieux pour l'époque. Niebuhr passa par l'Égypte, les cataractes du Nil, puis atteignit l'Arabie et explora notamment des zones du Yémen encore mal connues des Européens. Cette dimension d'enquête précise explique la valeur du livre pour l'histoire de la géographie et de l'orientalisme savant.
