Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Seventh impression, issued three years after the original edition of 1857. 8vo. xxiv, 367pp. Bound into half-leather with textured cloth-covered sides, lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. With the fifteen-page preface with was first included in the sixth edition. A little quite light wear to the corner tips and backstrip ends. Some occasional quite light spotting. The binding tender at the front hinge. A small area of loss from the head of an unprinted concluding leaf, and a short closed tear to the base of the contents leaf. Newspaper clipping about Rugby School laid-in, with some uneven offset toning to the free endpaper. A nice crisp copy. From the library of E.M.Forster, with his name plate to the head of the front pastedown, beneath which is the somewhat more elegant bookplate of his aunt Laura Mary Forster (1839-1924). A nice early edition, splendidly enhanced by the Forster association. Also enclosed is a copy of the 1971 Heffer's catalogue which offered for sale the entirety of Forster's library. This Thomas Hughes item appears as #155 in that catalogue, and is priced at the princely sum of £2 (back when £2 meant a little more than it does today). In her later life she changed - became gentler, wiser, greater." - E. M. Forster on his aunt Laura Mary Forster (from his study of Marianne Thornton, who was Laura's aunt).…
