Add to basketVery rare second edition, the third known copy(?), of a chapbook used in a game of fortune-telling to amuse and entertain company at parties, weddings and other festive occasions. The book starts with a "necessary preface" explaining the rules of the game. It then continues by giving 118 questions or riddles, which are in turn followed by 118 pages giving 20 possible answers to each question. The right answer for each individual player is found by the manipulation and combination of certain numbers, like a person's date of birth, age, the actual date of the day the game is played, etc. At the end a number poem is added, starting with the line: "Al wat op Aarden is wordt door 't getal betekend" (Everything on earth gets meaning through a/the number). With the bookplate of Buijnsters-Smets on the verso of the front wrapper, the leaves are frayed and slightly water stained in the lower margin, not affecting the text, very slightly browned throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l STCN 305669192 (1 copy); WorldCat 1200507232 (2 copies) cf. (Other eds.) Muller 554; Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers (coll. Versnel), 891; Waller 712; Muller 554; Sale Cat. Folded fortune telling sheet with 18 black and white line illustrations, 47.2 x 33.8cm. Sheet evenly browned, one or two minor holes, backing paper on reverse annotated in Japanese but in good condition. This intriguing illustration delves into the practice of fortune-telling based on facial structure, depicting eleven male and seven female faces. At the top, two diagrams explain how facial features are divided and their symbolic meanings. The system identifies 12 key facial features and associates them with 9 personality types, including nobility, happiness, poverty, jealousy, and bad temper. The twelve illustrated faces vividly convey these traits, with each characteristic expertly captured in the artwork. The piece is mounted on Japanese scrap paper, which bears handwritten notes, adding a unique historical and cultural dimension to this fascinating example of traditional fortune-telling practices.
