Ouvrage publié grâce à une subvention du Gouvernement général de l'Algérie par André Basset. Recueil en deux volumes comprenant 575 textes recueillies et traduits par le Père de Foucauld à partir de 1906 et éditées en 1925 et 1930 aux Editions LEROUX. Charles de Foucauld est convaincu que l'évangélisation passe par le respect et la compréhension des cultures dans lesquelles il vit. À maintes reprises dans sa correspondance, il déplore la connaissance superficielle et l'irrespect manifesté envers le peuple touareg par des missionnaires et des membres de l'administration française. Charles de Foucauld travaille plus de douze ans à l'apprentissage de la culture touarègue. Dès 1907, Charles recueille les poèmes touarègues en contrepartie d'une petite rémunération. Toutes les poésies étant apprises par c?ur par les Touaregs, Charles recopie celles qu'on lui dicte, passant des heures à écouter les femmes les réciter. Il finit ce travail sur l'?uvre poétique des Touaregs le 28 novembre 1916, deux jours avant sa mort.
