September 1853 in Neustadt in Schlesien geboren, beendete 1874 in Breslau seine Studien und begann seine ärztliche Laufbahn in Hamburg als Assistent an der Augenklinik des St. Georg-Krankenhauses. 1879 übernahm er die Prosektur, ging aber 1889 an das Eppendorfer Krankenhaus über, dessen Prosektur er bis zum Jahre 1924 inne hatte. 1909 wurde ihm vom Hamburger Senat der Professortitel verliehen, 1919 übernahm er an der Hamburger Universität das Ordinariat für pathologische Anatomie. Es ist sein besonderes Verdienst, schon in der Klinik angewandte Methoden, vor allem die Bakteriologie und die Röntgendiagnostik, für die pathologische Anatomie nutzbar gemacht zu haben. Von seinen bedeutenden bakteriologischen Arbeiten, die aus der Verbindung mit der pathologischen Anatomie hervorgegangen sind, seien besonders die über Typhus, über Paratyphus und über Gasbrand, dessen von ihm entdeckter Erreger seinen Namen trägt (WELCH-FKAENKELscher Bazillus, Zbl. Bakter. 1893, Bd. 13, S. 13), hervorgehoben. Es beschäftigten ihn u. a. auch die speziellen pathologischen Veränderungen am Knochensystem, die Erkrankungen der Nasennebenhöhlen, des Auges, des Gehörorgans, des Larynx, der Trachea, die metastatischen Dermatosen.
