Sir George von Franckenstein war von 1920 bis 1938 Osterreichs Botschafter in London und hatte zuvor als Jugendfreund von Hugo von Hofmannsthal an verschiedenen kaiserlichen Gesandtschaften in St. Petersburg, Rom und Tokio gedient. Seine wahrend des Zweiten Weltkriegs in England verfassten Memoiren, die bislang nicht auf Deutsch veroffentlicht wurden, bieten tiefgehende Einblicke in die kritischen Phasen der osterreichischen Aussenpolitik vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg und insbesondere vor dem ,Anschluss" an Hitler-Deutschland. Der Autor schildert lebhaft das Leben am russischen Zaren- und am japanischen Kaiserhof zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wahrend des Ersten Weltkriegs war er in Konstantinopel tatig und nahm 1919 als osterreichischer Delegierter an den Friedensverhandlungen in Saint Germain teil. Besonders seine Zeit als Botschafter in London vor 1938 ist von grossem politischen Interesse. Als herausragender Reprasentant der alten osterreichischen Kultur gewann er die Sympathie fuhrender Kreise und verlieh der Gesandtschaft seines kleinen Heimatlandes eine uber deren politisches Gewicht hinausgehende Bedeutung. Zudem wird seine tiefe Freundschaft mit Hugo von Hofmannsthal beleuchtet, dessen Briefe an Franckenstein hier erstmals veroffentlicht werden. Das Vorwort zur deutschen Erstausgabe stammt von Otto von Habsburg, wahrend eine historische Einleitung von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lothar Hobelt verfasst wurde.…
