Wenn heute sechs Maier und ein Bildhauer ge-meinsam ausstell…en, erwartet man, daß sie in irgendeinem Verwandtschaftsverhältnis stehen, stilistisch oder regional oder was es sei. Das Ist bei den Stipendiaten der Ford-Foundation, die für ein halbes oder ganzes Jahr nach Berlin kommen konnten, nicht der Fall. Die Maler und Bildhauer, die den Künsten auf der Insel Berlin neue Impulse geben und ihrerseits sich von dem vielgerühmten sachlichen Arbeitsklima dieser Stadt anregen lassen sollen, stehen alle für sich und stimmen höchstens darin überein, daß sie angesehene, bzw. fördernswerte Persönlichkeiten sind. sie sind nicht so berühmt, können es aber noch werden. Uns inter-essiert die Leistung, auch wenn sie mehr ein Versprechen ist, nicht der Ruhm. Aber da sehe ich strafende Blicke, sind Emilio Vedova und William Scott nicht ebenso berühmt, haben sie nicht schon große internationale Kunstpreise erhalten, und haben ihnen nicht bereits namhafte Schriftsteller große Monographien gewidmet? Allerdings, und sie sind auch gar nicht mehr so jung, Scott ist 1913 geboren und Vedova 1919. Trotzdem bleibt ein Unterschied, ein ehrenvoller, beide Maler sind noch im Aufstieg und haben die Höhe ihrer Leistung noch nicht erreicht. Nichts ist festgelegt, alles kann sich noch wandeln, nur Begabung und Charakter stehen über jeder Diskussion. Und auch der wesentlich jüngere Frederic Benrath, Jahrgang 1930, ist keineswegs unberühmt, eher wäre es der fast gleichaltrige Marvin Goldstein, der neben der Malerei Psychologie studierte und einige Jahre Kunstpädagoge war. Die beiden Frauen unter den Ford-Gästen, Ruth Francken und Shirley Jaffe, sind etwa gleichaltrig, von dem gleichen Mut beseelt und seit Jahren ansässig in Paris.
