[Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-1/2" x 5-7/8" Thomas Anderson "studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MD in 1853. While at University…he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his 'Florula Adenensis,' published in 1860." [wiki]. Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards (especially lower board and corners), some soiling to boards and back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of "List of Papers" (a.k.a. table of contents), age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves as well as a bit to tail -going towards middle of leaves, water damage is most noticeable on the leaves with illustrations (see photos), some light chipping and creasing to lower corner of last few leaves. A Good copy. Period binding, stamped in gilt to back strip, black ink stain to all edges.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An unusually good and complete set of this work, as originally issued in six parts, each part with three engraved plates by Fred Barnard and 16 large pages of text with wood engraved illustrations by various other artists. The Barnard plates are reproduced in photogravure (a lithogr…aphic method) on thin india paper which is mounted onto thick card, each with a commentary on the facing page. The loosely laid in tissue guards are all present - ironically it is these which tend to create most harm in the form of foxing, but in this set the foxing is minimal, affecting the facing pages very slightly and the plates hardly at all. Bound with staples in thick card covers which are all clean apart from Division 3 which has some uneven darkening and foxing on the front board and Division 6 which has the same on the back board. Division 6, which also has the full contents pages and list of illustrations, has been bound upside down, but it is complete. Barnard was commissioned to do the illustrations originally for the Household Edition of Dickens in about 1871. Frederick Barnard (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The original six divisions of Archer's charmingly illustrated biographies Originally supplied to subscribers only. "Written in a spirited and attractive style. The characters which Charles Dickens has created are living, moving personalities in the minds and imaginations of the large majority of E…nglish men and women. To portray these characters in a manner which shall satisfy the aspirations of the countless multitudes of the author's admirers is a success of which any artist may feel justly proud." With six of the original eighteen photogravures, described as "absolutely unrivalled as masterpieces of their particular kind." As well as numerous wood-cut vignettes. Illustrated by Victorian illustrator, caricaturist, genre painter, and well known Dickens' illustrator, Frederick (Fred) Barnard. Barnard undertook an enormous task when he was commissioned in 1871 by Chapman and Hall to illustrate nine volumes of the Household Edition of Dickens's works. Included would be Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Sketches by Boz, Nicholas Nickleby, Barnaby Rudge, Dombey and Son and Martin Chuzzlewit. He followed in the footsteps of the respected Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") who had worked with Dickens himself. For his prodigious output of some 450 illustrations over an eight-year period, Barnard could lay just claim to the title of "The Charles Dickens among black-and-white artists". Frederick Barnard brought an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Dickens novels to bear on his work. A young man when he started on his mammoth task, Barnard decided that he would concentrate on scenes other than those that Browne and Dickens had chosen to portray. Whereas 'Phiz' was inclined to create dramatic group scenes for his prints, Barnard was more interested in showing the relationships between pairs of characters. While Phiz had to produce illustrations for the monthly serials as Dickens wrote them, Barnard had the advantage of being able to read the complete work repeatedly before starting on his drawings. At the same time Barnard had to seamlessly blend the characters as visualised by 'Phiz' with his own style, not daring to deviate too much from their established appearance. Written and edited by Thomas Archer. Author of "Fifty Years of Social and Political Progress", "Decisive Events in History", "Vanishing London", and "Pictures, Royal Portraits". In original quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, some light marks to the boards and wear to the extremities. Division one has some heavier sunning to the boards. Internally, all divisions are generally firmly bound, although lacking twelve of the original plates. Some light scattered spotting and handling marks, although generally bright. Very Good. Frederick (Fred) Barnard (illustrator). book.

Illustrated by Victorian illustrator, caricaturist, genre painter, and well known Dickens' illustrator, Frederick (Fred) Barnard. Barnard was commissioned in 1871 by Chapman and Hall to illustrate nine volumes of the Household Edition of Dickens's works, including 'Bleak House', 'A Tale of Two Cities', 'Sketches by Boz', 'Nicholas Nickleby', 'Barnaby Rudge', 'Dombey and Son' and 'Martin Chuzzlewit'. He followed in the footsteps of the respected Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") who had worked with Dickens himself. Barnard decided that he would concentrate on scenes other than those that Browne and Dickens had chosen to portray. It was this dangerous, but ultimately successful balancing act that earned Barnard many admirers, and established him as a notable illustrator and artist.
