It explores how Spanish poetry emerged from the turbulent backdrop of a nation struggling to reclaim its land from Moorish rule. The author skillfully examines the complex relationship between the Spanish and Portuguese languages and how their distinctive poetic traditions arose from a shared heritage and a common love for chivalrous tales. The book delves into the unique features of early Spanish verse, including the redondilla, a popular form of four-line trochaic verse that captured the spirit of the nation, and the less successful versos de arte mayor, a more complex dactylic stanza. It also analyzes the influences of the Arabic language and the impact of the Troubadour tradition on Spanish literary development, providing a compelling picture of how cultural exchange shaped the nationââ â¢s literary identity. Ultimately, this book offers a rich historical and critical perspective on the development of Spanish literature, highlighting the confluence of cultural forces that gave birth to a unique and vibrant national art form. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. A first edition translation of this fascinating work, a first of its kind, concerning the history of a subject of growing interest to the Britain of 1823. Translated from the original German by Thomasina Ross. Complete in two volumes. Friedrich Bouterwek (15 April 1766 9 August 1828), German philosopher and critic. After he had finished his law studies he was appointed to the Hanover Appellate Court, whilst, backed by Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim, he also gave his debut as an author under the pen name Ferdinand Adrianow in the Göttinger Musenalmanach published by Gottfried August Bürger. As a philosopher, he is interesting for his criticism of the theory of the "thing-in-itself". Following this train of thought, Bouterwek left the Kantian position through his opposition to its formalism. His chief critical work was the Geschichte der neuern Poesie und Beredsamkeit (Göttingen, 12 vols., 1801-1819), of which the history of Spanish literature has been published separately in French, Spanish and English. In original publisher's paper covered boards with cloth spines, and paper spine labels. Externally sound although rubbed with marks, and wear to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright with a few odd browned pages, and scattered foxing throughout. Tidemarks to several pages of volume I. Good. book.
