Frederick Woods was a versatile writer and administrator, whose 30 published books ranged from historical schol…arship to raunchy thrillers (under the transparent pseudonym of Fredric Woods). After years of patient part-time toil, he published A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Winston Churchill, the standard bibliography. All his life Woods was fascinated by Winston Churchill and when he was 61, he received a doctorate from Keele University for a thesis on Churchill as author, although Woods held no other degree. This brought him international acclaim. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 - 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, military officer, and writer who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 (during the Second World War) and again from 1951 to 1955. Few people realize that Winston Churchill's fame began with the name he made for himself as a war correspondent during the years of Britain's last imperial wars. Beginning 1897 and continuing for about 3 years thereafter, he sent electrifying and unusual despatches to two London morning papers from the front lines of battle at the Northwest Frontier in India, where he had found service with the Bengal Lancers; from General Kitchener's campaign to resubjugate the "whirling" Dervishes in the Sudan; and from the height of the Boer War in South Africa. He was a prolific writer throughout his life, producing numerous press articles, biographies, several volumes of memoirs and histories, and a novel. Volume I of the Centenary Limited Edition of the Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill, containing "My Early Life" and "My African Journey". The Collected Works were published by the Library of Imperial History, London, to mark the centenary of Churchill's birth in 1874. From description in prelims: "The Collection is issued as a limited edition and contains all 50 of Churchill's published titles, arranged in 34 volumes. Only 2,000 sets have been authorized for the British Empire and Commonwealth, excluding Canada, and a further 1,000 sets for the United States of America and Canada." To achieve publication, "eleven publishing houses in Great Britain, the United States and Canada released their individual copyrights, in exchange for the promise that no other complete collection of Churchill's works would be published until the expiration of international copyright in 2019" (Richard M. Langworth).
