Hardcover. Condition: VG++. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Drawings, Maps, Diagrams, Graphs and Charts (illustrator). 1st. This collection of 12 anthropological essays was published in 1959 as a mark of respect, admiration and appreciation by prominent archeologists and academics from NZ and Australia following the retirement of Professor HD Skinner, for many years pre-eminant in that field in NZ. Dr Skinner was Director of Otago Museum and a number of his fellow academics and former anthropology students decided a series of essays on South Pacific topics would provide an appropriate tribute to the man and his contribution to the discipline. In 1917, following service with the NZ Army in Gallipoli, where he was wounded, Harry Skinner began studies for a Diplioma in Anthropology at Cambridge University, graduating in 1918. Returning to NZ he accepted a dual appointment as assistant curator of the Otago University museum and a lectureship in ethnology. He became director of the museum in 1937 and continued to advance archeology in NZ up to his retirement in the mid-1950s. The 12 essay contributors were all NZers "by birth or adoption" and all were influenced by the teaching and the field work of Dr Skinner who was a pioneer in both the academic and physical aspects of archeology in NZ and the South Pacific. Apart from a memoir chapter on the life of Dr Skinner, six of the essays cover Maori topics, one Maori/Polynesian race and politics, two adzes from eastern Polynesia and Tikopea (Solomon Group), the others relate to ceremonial meanings in New Guinea, the Siovili Cult in Samoa and Fijian social structures .First edition of 1959 from Thomas Avery, 265 pages including bibliography of Dr Skinner's publications. White hard covers with blue fabric spine strip with gilt titles and decorative borders are VG++.
