CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: As an explorer, Army officer, and politician, John C. Frémont was a key figure in the nation s westward growth. His expeditions charted previously little known territory for Congress and settlers migrating west. His father-in-law, the expansionist-minded Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, was instrumental in obtaining congressional funding for the expeditions and report that furnished Congress with facts for legislation on western territories. Frémont served as California s first U.S. senator from 1850 to 1851. He ran unsuccessfully as the antislavery Republican Party s first presidential candidate in 1856. John Charles Fremont s 1842, 1843 44 Report and map of his exploratory expeditions to the American West guided thousands of overland immigrants to the Oregon and California regions from the years 1845 to 1849. In 1849 Joseph Ware wrote the Emigrants Guide to California, which was largely drawn from Fremont s Report, and was to guide the forty-niners through the California gold rush years. Fremont s Report was more than a travelers guide it was a U.S. government publication that achieved the expansionist objectives of a nation, and provided scientific and economic information concerning the potential of the trans-Mississippi West for pioneer settlement. This report was one of the most influential U.S. government publications of the nineteenth century, and a landmark in U.S. government publishing. The original edition was accompanied by George Carl Ludwig (Charles) Preuss Map of an Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 and to Oregon & North California in the Years 1843 44 by Brevet Capt. J.C. Fremont of the Corps of Topographical Engineers Under the orders of Col. J.J. Abert, Chief of the Topographical Bureau. FIRST EDITION, the Senate issue, with the astronomical and meteorological observations omitted from the House issue and subsequent editions. Hardcover. Senate Issue. 691pp. Octavo [23 cm] Rebound in sturdy tan cloth. New endsheets and flyleaves. Good plus. The plates and pages are foxed, and there are sporadic tidemarks of varying sizes on the pages as well. 22 single-sided plates (views, botanical, fossils) and 3 maps (missing the large folding map by Charles Preuss, and the map at p. 247). John Fremont's expeditions of 1842 and 1843-44 were the most spectacular reconnaissance of the American West since Lewis and Clark. Performed under the auspices of the Army Bureau of Topographical Engineers, the expedition's published reports and maps brought a factor of dependability and trustworthiness that would aid American settlement of the West. Fremont's report was the most detailed observations of the western territories at the time. The country covered by the report was previously terra incognito--Brigham Young is said to have used both the report as a guide in bringing the Mormon people West. Utah was then part of Mexico and would first become Deseret and then Utah territory. One of the seminal works for any western or Utah collector. Howes F-372(Senate Issue). Wagner/Camp 115.2.
