Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1849 Expanded Edition with additional material on the California gold rush. In Fair condition for age. Has plate of Fremont and Albert, Missing map. Covers are severely rubbed and worn. Spine intact, but faded with flaking at top and bottom, some gold embossing and stag motif still remain. All pages are brittle and heavily foxed.

Hardcover in dark brown cloth with spine lettered and decorated in gilt. a somewhat later edition, with "Advertisment To The New Edition" dated January 1849 on page 4. Two frontispiece portraits, one of Fremont and one of Col. J.J. Albert and two additional plates. 456 pp. A later printing of this edition (Howes F370 which lists editions through 1847), map not called for in this edition. There is a new preface and the aforementioned Advertisment to the New Ediiton as well as new material on the Califonia Gold Rush region. Very good, bit of shallow wear head of spine; there is a tear to page 203/204 with slight loss of text.

(wst) Reprint of Fremont's Reports of his U.S. Army. exploring expeditions of 1842 and 1843/44 through the American West. The Reports are directed to Col. J.J.Albert, Chief of the Corps. of Topographical Engineers (the frontis portraits are of Fremont & Col. Albert). This "new edition" was timed to coincide with the great California Gold Rush and to encourage the "forty-niners" with added articles on the gold regions of California including Colonel Mason's "Official Report", routes to and physical geography of California. "In Upper California - may be found the modern Canaan, a land 'flowing with milk and honey,' its mountains studded and its rivers lined and choked, with gold!".

Hardcover. Condition: Good Minus. Fifteenth thousand. A Good Minus reference copy with soiling, discoloration, and minor dampstaining throughout. The text, however, is totally legible. The brown clothbound case is well-worn, exposing the boards beneath and threatening to come off the spine entirely. The block is soundly bound and the pages crisp. A previous owner's signature to the FFEP. 456 pages. 5" x 7.75". Between 1842 and 1954, John Charles Frémont (18131890) led five expeditions across the American West. This book, originally published in 1845, covers the first two explorations. The US Congress happily distributed the work as propaganda to encourage westward expansion and settlement. Additional materials describe Californian geography and the quality of its gold, a boon to the Gold Rush. .

Half Leather. Condition: Good. From the bookplate on inside front cover: No. 6580 Extrait Des Statuts de la ?Bibliotheque Francaise San Francisco. Signed on the front free page: P.A. Bergerot (it could be G.A.?) On the title page is a sticker: Offert Par Monsieur P.A. Bergerot. Below the sticker is Stamped Ligue Nationale France-ISE, San Francisco, 1907. Stamp also appears at the end of the book. Appears to have been rebound as the binding is in great condition for an 1849 book. There is a small stamp on inside of back cover: CHS Dup.California Historical Society duplicate. No other markings in book. No foxing except on the inside of the front and back covers. Not really foxing but discoloration from the glueing of the leather binding.

Leather-bound. Condition: Near Fine. Later printing. Calf boards, rebacked in smooth calf, with contrasting spine labels, gilt-lettered, with five raised bands, and the date gilt stamped in the 6th (bottom) compartment. The choice of leather seems conscious with numerous scratches and imperfections (esp. rear board) seemed desired for "rough and ready" effect. 12.5 cm. x 19 cm. Previous owner's hand lettered name within decorative hand-drawn border to front free endpaper, and the previous owner's "Buffalo State of New York, as well. Moderate foxing in sections throughout., Annoying, but none to obscure. 456 pp. Double frontis portraits, of J.C. Fremont (Lieut.Col. Mounted Rifles) and Col. J.J. Abert.) plus two additional plates. "John Fremont's report of his second expedition is one of the single most important pieces of Western Americana. His exploration of the overland trails to Oregon and California was of great interest to an expanding nation.and the excitement soon generated by the Mexican-American War and the Gold Rush made it one of the most popular American books of the mid-19th century. In various editions (the fourth edition of Wagner-Camp describes over two dozen) this report was more widely read than any other account of the West at the time, and the text and map had a seminal effect on the routes frequented in the great period of emigration.
