Anglo-French actor best remembered for having presented Charles Dickens with the Swiss chalet he erected in the garden at Gadshill and in which he wrote Great Expectations. The recipient was a lawyer and antiquary. The signature is on a slip approximately two inches by four and a half, presumably part of a letter or envelope, and laid down on a piece of card. Miniscule loss to part of slip, but text unaffected. Inscribed 'Fred. Ouvry Esq. | Ch. Fechter', with the signature underlined and overlined by Fechter.

See his entry in Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Taylor's in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, and folded once. In worn envelope with Penny Red stamp and postmark, and slight loss around flap. The envelope was no doubt retained because it was addressed by Delaunay to 'Sir Tom Taylor / Lavender Sweet [sic] / Wandsworth'. A neatly laid written and laid out communication, addressed to 'Cher Monsieur Taylor' and signed 'Yours truly / L Delaunay / de la Comedie française'. He regrets that he and his wife cannot accept Taylor's 'très cordiale invitation', as they accepted a similar one ten days before from 'Mr. & Mrs William Spottiswode' [sic]. He concludes with the thought that it would have been 'bien agréable de faire plus ample connaissance avec un homme d'un esprit aussi fin et aussi distingué'.

8vo. Together 1¾ pp. on bifolia. With autograph addresses. A letter to a M. Laurent suggests that David played at the Comédie-Française for some time, as it is written on stationery of the theatre. In the letter, he asks Laurent to visit him the following day. - The second letter is addressed to the important director Anténor Joly (1799-1852) at the Théâtre Ventadour. David reminds Joly of his promise to "occupy himself with my return to the theatre" and remarks bitterly that "with a bit of kindness and goodwill and, above all, the oblivion of an old grudge" Joly could already have placed him in several performances: "Je crois qu'il est nécessaire que je rappelle a Monsieur Anténor que je suis encore de ce monde et qu'il m'a fait une promesse, celle de s'occuper de ma rentrée au théâtre. Avec un peu de bienveillance et de bon vouloir et surtou l'oublie d'une vielle rancune il aurait certes déjà pu me placer dans une des nombreuses pièces en répétition [.]". - Traces of folds and seal. The letter to Joly with embossed monogram, several tears and stronger browning to the address leaf.
