8vo. 4 pp. With envelope. To Albert Adès. He had Après le cubisme sent to him, written in collaboration with Ozenfant. "The ideas expressed therein are the result of many life experiences, and we have obliged ourselves to write them with clarity, perhaps even with a certain dryness and a deliberate lack of lyricism that may offend you. However, there are undeniable things to be said at this time, to crystallize around the splendid torch of our era, so many devoted wills that desire serious work but feel too isolated. I know you to be very passionate; I am, at the bottom, sometimes vehement and, under apparent calm, violent. But I do not admit that art should be wanton when in all human activity, discipline and rigor are indispensable, factors of beauty, order, and harmony. From there to putting it in painting? At the very least, some guidance is required. Perhaps you do not agree at all. It would be very agreeable to us if a strong and orderly artist like you judged our work, even if you were to clearly oppose our ideas. I believe controversy is useful on this subject, and I would be very happy to see you develop these ideas in the Grande Revue or elsewhere.".

8vo. 1½ pp. on bifolium. Beautiful letter to a fellow member of the Académie de Marseille, delegating his voting rights within the Académie to the recipient due to his "great and grave preoccupations" with the completion of the Marseille Cathedral that was now imminent: "Voici le pouvoir que vous me demandez : je ne puis le confier en meilleures mains : certain que vous en ferez usage pour le mieux des intérêts de l'Académie. J'ai eu de grandes et graves préoccupations depuis quelques années : enfin l'horizon s'éclaircit un peu, et peut-être serai-je plus livre : La Cathédrale de Marseille devant bientôt être remise au Clergé. Croyez qu'il me dera très agréable ; si je puis enfin dire 'Deus mihi hæc otia fecit' d'aller reprendre place au milieu de mes confrères par ma présence ou par mes travaux". - Only 13 days after writing the letter, on 30 November 1893, could Henri Antoine Révoil hand over the largely finished cathedral to bishop Joseph Jean Louis Robert. Révoil was the third and final architect of the cathedral that was built between 1852 and 1893. Following the deaths of the first architect Léon Vaudoyer (1803-72) and his student Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-74), Révoil took over the construction site and was also responsible for the design of the ornaments. - Well preserved.

Small-8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. To the journalist and music critic Charles Vincens, originally accompanying an official authorization to vote in his stead for the reception of Charles Champoiseau to the Académie de Marseille. In the letter, Révoil cites his numerous "construction sites", including restorations of historical buildings, final works on the Marseille Cathedral ("la Major"), and Notre Dame de la Garde, leaving him "not one hour of freedom": "Voici mon pouvoir ; je ne saurai le confier entre meilleures mains. - The archaeologist Charles Champoiseau (1830-1909) is best known for the discovery of the Hellenistic Winged Victory of Samothrace in 1863. - On mourning paper.

4to. 1 page. Attached are 3 pages comprising 3 typed letters in related correspondence addressed to Eiffel. Accusations of plagiarized aircraft designs, addressed to Ernest Lemonon (1878-1956), lawyer at the Court of Appeal in Paris. Eiffel states confidently, "L'avion Junker-Fokker est en effet un plagiat de notre avion L.E. et on m'a dit que cela avait été construit d'après un bleu. qui avait été communiqué." He goes on to direct Lémonon to the relevant pages of his recent book, "Résumé des Principaux Travaux exécuté pendant la guerre au Laboratorie aerodynamique G. Eiffel", which Eiffel feels will prove that his designs were indeed published first, and then copied by his German competitors. - While it is unclear that Eiffel's complaint had any effect, Anthony Fokker of Junker-Fokker did have something of a reputation for acquiring designs through dishonourable tactics, though from his reluctant business partner, Hugo Junkers, rather than Gustave Eiffel. - Gently creased along folds and at corners. Glued to the reverse is the first of three typewritten letters, the other two of which are also pasted together at the top left corner. The additional typed letters are on much thinner paper, which has browned and lightly chipped along the edges.

8vo. 2 leaves, plus two 4to leaves of typed letters to Le Corbusier (carbon copies, 19 April and 16 Sept. 1935). Writing to his "cher ami" Pierre Abraham (1892-1974), a French author and ex-aviation officer who in 1935 was leading the research team compiling the new French encyclopedia. Le Corbusier writes that he has received a previous letter, informs Abraham of a Paris address and travel plans to America ("Partirai le 16 oct. à New York pour 2 mois"), and mentions that he has sent the requested information and "3 photos de l'architecture". Signed thrice on the handwritten pages, with "Le Corbusier" signed twice on the first leaf, and "LC" on the second. - The two typed letters, also from Le Corbusier, are both related to Abraham and the Encyclopedia, in which Le Corbusier evidently had some involvement, especially in acquiring material. - Later name and number added to margins of first leaf in blue crayon; a few faint smudges, gentle creasing. The typewritten leaves are on delicate paper, with some marginal chipping, and are likewise numbered.
