Add to basketCondition: Very Good. First edition in publisher's original blue card wrap covers (soft back). 8vo. 8'' x 6''. In December 1942 Fidelity, with T Company, 40 Commando aboard, joined Convoy ON 154. The convoy was attacked by U-boats from 27 December while north of the Azores. On 29 December Fidelity, suffering from engine problems, fell out of the convoy. She launched her aircraft as an anti-submarine patrol while repairs took place. During this time her aircraft reported lifeboats to the southwest and her landing craft was sent to pick them up. These were 44 men from Empire Shackleton, the convoy commodore's ship. During the night Fidelity was making 5 knots towards the Azores, but came under attack twice. She was fired on by U-225, and later by U-615. Both U-boats were driven off when Fidelity fired back. On 30 December she was found by U-435, under the command of Siegfried Strelow and was torpedoed twice. Strelow observed the sinking, and estimated about 300 survivors in the water, but when he made his report later he was asked "whether their destruction in the prevailing weather can be counted on". This was some months after BdU's infamous Laconia Order, instructing U-boat commanders not to assist survivors in any way, and regarded at the Nuremberg trials as a tacit encouragement to ensure there were none. At the time of her sinking Fidelity had on board some 369 souls. All were lost. Contains 128 pp with monochrome archive photographs and some maps throughout. Feint crease line to the top front corner and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A. WORLD WAR II (Second).

Add to basket3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with traces of mount, and red wax seal, adhering to the reverse of the second leaf, which is franked (the franker's name and signature illegible) to 'Sir John Phippart [sic] | &c &c | No 8 New Burlington St'. Slight loss to one corner of second leaf, from breaking open of seal, with damage to one word of text. The recipient is the naval writer John Philippart (c.1784-1874), and the address is in fact that of the publishing house of Colburn and Bentley, publishers of the Naval and Military Gazette of which Philippart was the editor. The letter, which concerns a contribution to that journal by Dundas, begins: 'Dear Sir | I shall send in a few days another conclusion to your journal which I think you will deem better worth insertion than my foregoing one. It contains the battle of Fuentes and some matter immediately succeeding'. Dundas hopes that Philippart will find room for the piece in the number for March, and explains that it will take at least as much space 'as the Artle you mention to be in the Jany No and which has not come to hand'. In a postscript he asks, 'If it is not a secre[t,] Pay who is [binded?] whose opinion in my respects coincide with mine?'.

Manuscript. Condition: Very Good. On offer is an outstanding archive of forty-seven [47] letters from the personal files of famed Admiral of the French Navy and Great Astronomer Amédée Ernest Barthélemy Mouchez. The archive dates 1846 through 1891 and is made up of a few letters from his sister, a letter to his mother and then the balance from colleagues, notables and friends; a number are on stationery of the Republic of France; Sociedad Cientifica "Antonio Alzate" Mexico; Ecole Normale Superieure Laboratoire de Chime; Senat and some French Ministerial Office letterheads. This fascinating archive touches upon many of Mouchez' career highlights as the letters deal with a number of different areas - Mouchez' work in China, matters of the Observatory, Mexico, personal communications of friends and colleagues etc. Mouchez had a spectacular career embarking on a career in the French Navy as an ensign in 1843. This was a period of relative international maritime peace and much of the navy's activities were dedicated to exploration and discovery. Mouchez was initially occupied with hydrographic studies along the coasts of Korea, China and South America, penetrating 320 km up the Paraguay River and exploring the Abrolhos Islands. He improved the practice of surveying at sea, adapting terrestrial instruments for naval use, and was especially concerned with the problems of determining longitude. He developed the use of the theodolite and meridian telescope to improve the error in establishing longitude. Attaining the rank of Captain in 1868, he embarked on a series of expeditions to chart the coast of Algeria. At the conclusion of his project in 1873, he was elected to the Bureau des Longitudes and, in the following year, was sponsored by the Académie des Sciences to observe the transit of Venus from St. Paul Island in the Indian Ocean. On December 9, he made a sequence of superb photographic plates of the event. In 1875, the Académie elected him a member of the astronomy section and in 1878 he was promoted to rear admiral and awarded the role of director of the Paris Observatory. The observatory had fallen into disrepair and disrepute since the chaos of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the Paris Commune of 1871. Mouchez set about a programme of reconstruction but failed to persuade the government to fund a new observatory outside the centre of Paris. In 1887, he collaborated with Sir David Gill to host an international astronomical conference in Paris. The principal outcome of the conference was a multi-national project to compile and index a photographic atlas of the heavens, the Carte du Ciel. The project consumed massive effort over several decades before it was rendered obsolete by modern astronomical methods. He is also credited with founding Mountsouris Observatory and he is the author of six books on astronomy, navigation, nautical instruction etc. A grand boulevard in Le Havre and a village in Algeria are named for Mouchez. This is a great archive of intersecting and diverse worlds being astronomy, France and her Navy, Algeria, militaria, geography, cartography and South America. VG. Autograph.

An instruction manual on naval tactics and signals compiled for the Spanish naval high command based on the latest reforms in accordance with the provisions of the navy act of 1802. Add to basketAt the time of writing, Berkeley's newly-constructed HMS Emerald had just completed her coppering and fitting-out at Woolwich. Sailing to join Jervis's Mediterranean fleet, within less than a year she would be involved in controversy. Following the Battle of Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797), in which HMS Emerald was too lightly built to take part, the victorious Jervis sent Berkeley off with a squadron of five ships in search of the disabled Spanish flagship, Santisima Trinidad. On 20 February Berkeley declined to engage when he sighted her under tow. This decision was widely criticised, and there were calls for Berkeley's court-martial. Two months later, on 26 April 1797, HMS Emerald was cruising with the Irresistible off the Spanish coast, when they captured two enemy frigates, one of which sank at sea. 1p, folio. "Letters to his family Thorp wrote numerous letters to his parents and siblings throughout his career, except for his time on Thisbe in Nova Scotia during his first year of service and his subsequent time on Magnificent. These were deposited in the National Maritime Museum in 1968 in the form of two letterbooks. Regrettably, no record of persons inspecting these letterbooks seems to have been kept by the National Maritime Museum but anyone studying them in detail who is familiar with the AubreyMaturin series of novels of Patrick O'Brian may find a remarkable coincidence between some of the descriptions in Thorp's letters and events or characters in O'Brian's novels, inviting speculation whether O'Brian may have read the letters and been inspired by their content. Thorp's letters describing the escape from Toulon, the attack on the Mortella Tower and the siege of Saint-Florent, the blockade of Corsica, the capture of Calvi and the cutting out of the Principe Fernando are particularly noteworthy. Folio and 8vo. Altogether 25 ½ pp. Interesting collection of letters, all addressed to a good friend named Paul whom he calls "Grand" and who appears to be a fellow writer. - In a letter from 1947 he expresses his outrage against Paul Claudel (1868-1955), elected to the Académie française on 4 April 1946: "A propos de l'election de Claudel, j'ai été proprement insulté. Car je ne sais lequel de ces deux bas canards [Claudel et Brisson] a insignué que toutes les attaques brissonnesques contre l'Académie datent de mon élection [.]". Farrère was himself elected to a chair at the Académie française on 26 March 1935, in competition with Paul Claudel, partly thanks to the lobbying efforts of Pierre Benoit. - Further, Farrère reflects on his novels, like "Fern-Errol" and "Homme Seul", which he describes as the "least superficial" works of his life: "Mon Fern-Errol peut plaire ou déplaire / mais je suis sûr que c'est avec mon Homme Seul, ce que j'ai écrit de moins superficiel de toute ma vie []" (Biarritz, 27 Nov. 1943).

Add to basketSplendid vellum manuscript on the condition and organisation of the French Royal Navy of King Louis XV in the year 1732, including maritime data on the French colonies in Canada, Louisiana and the West Indies. The manuscript is beautifully calligraphed in a formal roman and italic in brown-black, red and blue, sometimes with gold covering the ink, with 2 decorated initials in gold over red. The use of the high quality vellum, the fine gouache illustration, the lavishly executed calligraphy and the beautiful contemporary binding, indicate that the manuscript must have been produced for an important person, probably a head of the marine or an official at the court. The manuscript gives a complete survey of the size and organisation of the French navy of the Ancien Regime in 1732 and must have been top secret at the time! From the library of the well-known art historian and book collector Henri Beraldi (1849-1931). The manuscript is generally in fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot or small stain.
