He hopes he is not abusing the kindness of 'Monsieur Menager' (i.e. the house manager) by asking for two seats, for his wife and her friend, as they would like to go to the opera that night. After terminating the letter in the customary Gallic fashion, he adds a postscript asking for the reply to be left with the porter.

2pp, 12mo. On bifolium. Folded once. The first page is scored through in ink, with pencil annotations at head. The final page, with Saléza's signature, is unmarked. He asks him for as many seats as possible for that evening. He would like 'une bonne loge, deux Stalls et plusieurs petites places'. He will pass by the office to collection, and asks for them to be left in his name.

Françoise Rosay was a French opera singer, diseuse, and actress who enjoyed a film career of over sixty years and who became a legendary figure in French cinema. She went on to appear in over 100 movies in her career.

Glandaz, possibly the lawyer Sigismond Glandaz, informing him that he need not visit her husband, the baritone, composer and art collector Jean-Baptiste Faure, as he still has to "arrange everything" with Mr de Benoît and will in turn visit Glandaz on Monday: "Mon mari vous prie de ne pas prendre la peine de passer chez lui. Il doit s'occuper aujourd'hui de Monsieur de Bénoît [?], arranger tout avec lui, et lundi il ira chez vous pour vous rendre compte du résultat de ses démarches [.]". - Traces of folds. Some browning to the borders and traces of former mounting.

To an unnamed friend, offering him a box at the Paris Opera for the debut of her husband, the baritone, composer and art collector Jean-Baptiste Faure, which the recipient had promised to attend: "C'est vendredi prochain que mon mari début à l'Opéra. Vous nous avez promis d'assister à cette première représentation et j'espère que vous voudrez bien accepter une loge, peut-être un peu modeste, mais la meilleure que nous ayons pu obtenir [.]". - Constance-Caroline Levebvre and her equally famous stage partner Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830-1914) had married in 1859. Jean-Baptiste celebrated his successful debut at the Paris Opera with Józef Michal Poniatowski's "Pierre de Médicis" in October 1861. - Traces of folds and former mounting. With a minor tear and insignificant foxing.

8vo. Together 6 pp. on bifolia. Beautiful collection of letters spanning two decades. The earliest dated letter from 1858 is addressed to her physician, informing him about her treatment in the famous thermal baths of Cauterets (Occitanie): "J'ai voulu ne vous donner que de bonnes nouvelles, voilà pourquoi j'at tant tardé à vous écrire. Je suis très bien ici, parfaitement installée chez le docteur Charon qui m'a soignée merveilleusement. Il a un peu modifié le traitement que vous m'aviez indiqué, il craignait trop de fatigue. Et je ne prends qu'un demi-bain [.] et un bain local dans l'arrière gorge. Je suis à la Raillère et je ne crois pas qu'il m'ordonne d'aller à d'autres sources [.]". - An undated letter to a M. Escudier also concerns Lefebvre's fragile health. She informs the recipient that she has to return to the stage despite recovering from a flu, asking him for his help: "J'ai une grippe qui me fait beaucoup souffrir et cependant il faut demain faire ma rentrée. J'ai grande peur je vous l'avoue et j'aurai besoin de beaucoup d'indulgence. Vous avez été déjà si bienveillant pour moi que je viens vous demander votre appui. Dois-je y compter et me serez-vous un ami ?". - In a letter from 12 April 1878, Lefebvre informs her aunt how long she will remain in the countryside so that she might visit her: "Mama m'a dit que vous deviez aller à la campagne dans les premiers jours de la semaine. Nous y serons tous les jours excepté mardi prochain. Nous venons tous à Paris". - Finally, on 22 January 1879, she reminds a M. Amat of his promise to give her a box at the bal des artistes in exchange for her autograph, thus fulfilling her part of the agreement by way of reminding him: "Vous savez, mon cher Monsieur Amat, que je compte beaucoup sur la loge 27 pour le bal des artistes. Vous me l'avez promise à cette condition. Je tiens ma promesse et je vous livre enfin un autographe fort mal écrit, pas spirituel et qui n'a d'autre mérite que son authenticité en foi de quoi je signe". - Three letters on stationery with blindstamped monogram, the letter from 1858 on stationery with printed monogram. All with traces of former mounting.

To an acquaintance about a ten-year-old boy aspiring to become an artist, asking him to recommend a boarding school where he may receive a general as well as a musical education, as most schools offer only the former, mentioning the addressee's history of hosting female students, including the daughters of the violinist Lefebvre, for which reason she assumes he might know of a place for a boy as well: "Je connais un petit garçon de dix ans que ses parents eloignés de Paris destinent a être artiste. Dans un Collège et les pensions ordinaires, les soirs et le temps donnés à l'étude de la Musique sont en géneral sacrifiés à tout le reste, et on voudrait trouver une pension particulière ou il travaillerait d'abord la Musique de Piano etc. et en même temps des leçons d'histoire, géographie etc. que completteraient son Education. J'ai pensé que vous, Monsieur, qui avez eu chez vous quelques pensionnaires privilégiées (comme les Demoiselles Lefebvre de Clermont dont le père a été mon Maitre de Violon) pouviez mieux que personne m'indiquer une maison où l'on se chargerait aussi de l'éducation d'un garçon. Celui dont je vous parle joue déjà un peu du piano [.]". - With the former collector's number "27" in pencil. Je m'empresse de vous en prévenir et de vous prier de vouloir bien sacrifier quelques heures pour votre soirée et me donner vos suffrages si j'en paraissais de gré de votre sage appréciation []" (no place or date, 8vo, 1 page on bifolium with autograph address on verso). To "Juliette", probably the sculptor and pianist Juliette Dubufe, née Zimmermann (1822-55), proposing several pieces for her duet with Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830-1914), including duos from Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro, asking her to make the final decision and to set a date for rehearsals: "Proposez à Faure ces Morceaux - d'abord le petit duo de Don Juan que je veux absolument chanter avec lui, le petit duo des Noces de Figaro en Italien [.] Enfin décidez avec lui et je serai enchantée de répéter le jour qui lui conviendra le plus [.]". - Further, about having a bad cough, which is why she is not sure her voice will be on point for the performance, and about her intentions to attend a ball at Rose Marguerite Halphen's, the wife of the French mathematician Georges Henri Halphen (1844-89), the following Saturday, where she might dance until morning, promising to ice her throat and to do her best to please her co-singer the following day: "Je n'aurai pas tous mes moyens, je vous en préviens attendre que je tousse comme une malheureuse, et que j'aurai la faiblesse d'aller au bal costumé de Mme G Halphen Samedi et que dansant probablement jusqu'au matin ma voix ne sera pas claire le soir, j'avalerai des galces et je ferai mon possible pour plaire surtout à celui qui a la bonté de chanter avec moi [.]". - With the former collector's number "20" in pencil. 4to. 2 pages with address and postmark; broken red wax seal. Spiritual and moving letter from the former singer in misery to Jaques Cellerier (1742-1814), director of Le Théâtre des Arts. "You promised me, my kind, and very old friend, your services, your good offices, relative to my interests, eh! I claim them, because I find myself in a position so embarrassed, that I am forced to live as a poor wretch, to take my cazanier, and to deprive me of everything."French singer (soprano) and performer of Christoph Willibald Gluck, for whom she created the role of Eurydice inOrphée et Eurydice and the title role in Iphigénie en Aulide. According to her contemporaries, her voice was more beautiful than powerful, but she was a passionate actress. Her lack of discipline in both her professional and personal life led to a premature vocal decline.
