Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 310 pages. Published in 2016. The author's book-length account on subject. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Katie Roiphe's "The Violet Hour: Great Writers At The End". How six iconic writers in the Western tradition, very different from one another, faced The End to their productive and meaningful lives: Susan Sontag, Sigmund Freud, John Updike, Dylan Thomas, Maurice Sendak, and James Salter. Regardless of the actual time of death, Western culture views death as night, the "violet hour, the evening hour that strives homeward, and brings the sailor home from sea" (T. S. Eliot). "In the final acts of each of these creative geniuses are examples of courage, passion, self-delusion, pointless suffering, and superb devotion. There are also moments of sublime insight and understanding" (Publisher's blurb). "A beautiful book. The intensity of these 'passages' is deeply beguiling" (The New York Times). For these great writers (and for their fellow-writer Roiphe), death is a meaningful part of life that undermines meaning itself. Why? Because when the moment comes, we see what we have achieved (in terms of career, wealth, social status, and recognition) in its proper perspective: As nothing in the face of death. But: We also realize that what finally matters is our "track record" as human beings, that is, not as achievers, but what we have done for others: Those we have known - family, friends, colleagues, loved ones - and in a profound sense, through the way we have lived our lives, those we don't and will never know: Our fellow human beings. Western culture makes us think of mortality merely as two kinds of speed: (mercifully) sudden or (agonizingly) slow. Roiphe describes a third, more meaningful kind: Heroic. After all, unlike most of us, these writers have already ensured that they will live on through their work (which Roiphe celebrates), have therefore somehow outwitted death, and even achieved immortality. And yet, as one of them very famously wrote, the fully human way is to "rage, rage against the dying of the light" (Dylan Thomas). An absolute "must-have" title for Katie Roiphe collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, dated (two days after publication), and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "For - Warmly, Katie Roiphe 3/10/16". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, is a friend of the author, and cannot be named here. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, post-publication dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: This is a copy of the true First Edition. By the time Roiphe launched her book, it was already a bestseller. Copies available online are in subsequent printing. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KATIE ROIPHE TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0385343590. Signed by Author.…

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 215 pages. Published in 1989. The author's debut book. One of Wayne Koestenbaum's finest achievements, and his rarest book. The first regular trade edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 2017 Reissued Edition, published twenty-eight years later. Published in a small and limited first print run as the inaugural volume of the "Literature And Sexuality" Routledge Series. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Double Talk: The Erotics of Male Literary Collaboration". A subject the author was naturally born to write about: Men writing books together. "Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer on hysteria, J. A. Symonds and Havelock Ellis on sexuality, a novel by Ford Madox Ford (and Joseph Conrad), 'The Waste Land' of T. S. Eliot (and Ezra Pound), even the 'Lyrical Ballads' of Wordsworth (and Coleridge). Koestenbaum's startling interpretation of literary collaboration focusses on homosexual desire: Men write together in order either to express - or to evade homosexual feelings. Their writing becomes a 'textual intercourse', the book at once a female body they can share and the child of their partnership. These man-made texts steal a generative power that women's bodies represent. Seen as the site of a struggle between homosexual and homophobic energies, the texts Koestenbaum explores - works of psychoanalysis, sexology, fiction, and poetry - emerge as more complex, more revealing. They crystallize and refract the anxiety of male sexuality, and open up a deeper understanding of connections between the erotic and the literary. Koestenbaum connects male collaboration and the exchange of women within patriarchy. He peers into both medical texts and imaginative literature, disturbing our ready acceptance of the co-authored work. This strong and unsettling book transforms our understanding of the creative process, providing a new sense of what both collaborative and solitary artistry mean" (Publisher's blurb). The original Cover (since censored by Amazon and other platforms) is especially, even disturbingly, apt: It reproduces George Platt Lynes' great "homoerotic" photograph, "The Birth of Dionysus", one of the most imaginative male nude images ever conceived and realized. It shows a baby boy emerging from a naked man's ample thigh, Platt Lynes' serenely imagined substitute to a woman giving birth. An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "10 June 1989, With love and gratitude, Wayne". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is NO recipient explicitly named. But this copy comes from the Estate of the late great poet, editor, and translator, J.D. ("Sandy") McClatchy, who was a first-name basis, close friend and colleague of the author. This title is a contemporary classic. This is the only such signed, publication-year dated, and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should not be confused with the 2017 Reissued Edition, published twenty-eight years later. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant culture critics of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WAYNE KOESTENBAUM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0415790077. Signed by Author(s). …

She begins by stating that she thinks it was 'nice' of him 'to write about the novel, & about Christopher - he is a ginger coloured, rather fierce baby but most rewarding to look after!' She is 'sorry about the novel', and wonders whether his 'reader could remember it enough to say whether the skeleton of it would possibly make a film scenario & have you any strings in that world (possibly your uncle?) where I could send it?' kart. Condition: Sehr gut. V, 197 S. : Ill. ; 22 cm. Vorsatzblatt mit handschriftlicher Widmung und Unterschrift des Herausgebers für den Tübinger Medizinhistoriker Albrecht Hirschmüller. Seiten leicht gebräunt. - VERGRIFFEN. Wien : Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, 1936. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Octavo (190 x 135 mm), publisher's light blue cloth, the upper board with a facsimile of Freud's famous signature in darker blue, spine also lettered in dark blue (a little rubbed), in the publisher's dust jacket featuring a portrait of Freud (front panel with short repaired tear at top edge, minor wear at corners and spine ends, old collection shelf label towards foot of spine); the front free-endpaper with the author's signature and year boldly written in black fountain pen: 'Sigm. Freud 1936'; pp. 107, [1 blank], [1Verzeichnis der Bildbeilagen], [1 blank], [4 publisher's advertisements for the works of Freud]; with 5 b/w photographic plates; occasional foxing (very light and for the most part marginal), otherwise internally clean and sound. Signed by the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). The first edition of Selbstdarstellung (An Autobiographical Study) appeared in 1924 as a paperback published by Felix Meiner Verlag in Hamburg. Twelve years later, towards the end of his life, Freud revisited the project and, drawing on his accumulated experience, he substantially revised and expanded the text, more than doubling the original number of pages. This second edition, produced under the most oppressive conditions during the Nazi regime in Germany, was to be Freud's last publication for Internationaler Psychoanalystischer Verlag - his own independent publishing firm. Itincludes additional footnotes, a postscript, and supplementary material in the main text which broadens the account of hisprofessional development and of the birth of psychoanalysis. Alongside the previously shown 1909 portrait, it also features several illustrations for the first time: a picture of Freud as a boy; a photograph of the Freuds from their engagement period; a study based on the etching by Ferdinand Schmutzer; and a portrait from 1936. When our friend Frederick Crews, an eminent professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley and a passionate critic of Sigmund Freud, learned that we were contemplating publishing an edition of Freud's best-known case history, he and his wife invited Hoyem and Ketcham to dinner at a restaurant in San Francisco for the purpose of telling them that they were crazy to do this. Twenty-two years later we learned that he plans to finish off Freud with a 900-page book scheduled in the near future. Fred is one of the sanest people we know. Jim Dine and the philosopher Richard Wollheim (1923-2003) were friends and both were interested in Freud, Wollheim having written an intellectual biography of him. They advanced the idea of the "Wolf-Man" to be illustrated by Dine and with an introduction by Wollheim. Many experiments were made with techniques for making prints in the book that involved photopolymer plates and lithography, but in the end conventional woodblocks and intaglio plates produced the best results. Please note that this listing is for the book with the additional large etching. ___POSTAGE: Please note that additional postage may apply for both domestic and international orders, due to the size of the print, which will be shipped loosely rolled (unless other arrangements are requested in advance); please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Grinstein 10389; Norman Freud Catalog #20 (this copy). Inscribed by Freud on the first page "Hommage de l'auteur". Freud's first independent entry into the field of psychopathology and the first designation of anxiety neurosis as a separate nosological entity. Freud based his distinction between neurasthenia (actual neurosis) & psychoneurosis on whether there was a psychical process at work producing the results. An important paper which pointed in the direction Freud's subsequent work was to pursue lie, the elucidation of the psychical processes resulting in neurotic symptoms.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Hardcover. Number 126 of 250 numbered copies, signed by the artist on his artist's statement preceding the text. There were also 26 lettered copies for private distribution. This was the forty-first publication of the Press. The text of this book is "From the History of an Infantile Neurosis" that was reprinted in The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, Volume XVII, pages 7-122, translated from the German under the editorship of James Strachey. The Wolf-Man was the pseudonym given by Freud to his patient, a young Russian man named Sergei Pankejeff. Freud's analysis of the Wolf-Man became his most famous case, centering on the interpretation of dreams and childhood sexuality. In addition to the text of Freud's study, this book includes an erudite and detailed discussion of Freud's work and influence by Richard Wollheim. Wollheim was a British philosopher noted for original work on mind and emotions, especially as related to the visual arts, specifically, painting. The striking woodcuts and etchings illustrating the book were done by Jim Dine (b. 1935). He is a well-known American artist who rose to prominence in late-1950's New York. He was closely associated with the Pop Art movement. An innovator throughout his long career, Dine's extensive output includes paintings, assemblages, sculptures, drawings, prints, and over twelve books of poetry. He has been the subject of more than 300 solo exhibitions around the world, including eleven major surveys and retrospectives since 1970. The book was designed, printed and bound at the Arion Press under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. Bound in gray cloth with a black cloth spine with titling in silver. The front cover has an image by Dine of a young boy confronting a wolf. The rare first edition of this significant work on cerebral palsy, Freud's final neurological treatise before devoting his career to psychoanalysis. An exceptional presentation copy inscribed to his friend and colleague Dr. Rudolph Reitler, the first person to practice psychoanalysis after Freud: 'Herr Dr. R. Reitler /Freundshaftlich / Verf(asser)'. Freud's first scientific speciality was neurology, and he trained at the Salpêtrià re in Paris with the famous neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. 'By 1897 Freud had become a leading authority on the subject of children's paralyses, so it was natural that Carl Nothnagel, in planning his encyclopaedia of medicine, should ask Freud to write the section on infantile cerebral paralysis. The work. contains an excellent description of the various forms of cerebral palsy, with precise classification of the different spastic symptoms and reference to the extra-pyramidal symptoms. Freud is today considered a founder of of pediatric neurology, and Pollack called Freud's Infantile Cerebrallähmung "one of the most important works ever written on this subject"' (Hook & Norman, The Norman Library of Science and Medicine F32). The recipient of this copy, Rudolph Reitler (1865-1917) attended lectures by Freud while studying medicine at the University of Vienna and soon became one of his close associates. In 1902 he received a postcard from Freud inviting him to join a new discussion group on psychoanalysis, the groundbreaking Wednesday Psychological Society (later the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society), of which the physicians Wilhelm Stekel, Alfred Adler, Max Kahane were also founding members. First edition, inscribed presentation copy; 8vo; 3 folding charts, prospectus and publisher's ads to inner wrappers, contents very faintly toned; original yellow wrappers printed in black, housed in a marbled case, grey mark to the lower wrapper, spine chipped and cracked, particularly at the tail, and re-laid down, small chip at the corner of the upper wrapper adjacent to but not affecting the inscription, wrappers rubbed and a little marked and dulled, very good condition; 327pp. Hook & Norman (The Norman Library of Science & Medicine), F32; Garrison & Morton (A Medical Bibliography), 4708.1. …

8vo (140 x 190 mm). Ca. 100 ff. with five entries, written on rectos only. Full mottled calf by Hubert & Lerner, Vienna. All edges gilt. Anna Freud's guest book from Hochrotherd in the Vienna Woods, where she and her partner Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham had bought an old farmhouse as a weekend and holiday home in 1930. Several major figures in the psychoanalytic movement signed the book: Sigmund Freud signed the first page, dating his inscription 26 July 1932 (with a three-word sentiment in German: "halb als Papa"). Marie Bonaparte (Princess George of Greece and Denmark), the French author and psychoanalyst, appears to have joined her together with Freud; her inscription bears the same date, and also carries a sentiment thanking the recipient for a good meal. After a hiatus of one leaf, Ernest Jones, Freud's lifelong friend and his biographer, signed the book, dated 24 August 1934, noting that it was "a souvenir of a delightful and eventful experience". - Max Halberstadt, the Hamburg photographer best known for his portraits of Freud, his father-in-law, signed on 2 February 1936: "Via Hochrotherd nach Johannesburg". A few months after this inscription, Halberstadt emigrated to South Africa; his wife and daughter followed him in August 1936. - René Laforgue, the French psychoanalyst, and his wife Paulette, conclude the series with a signature and sentiment (again in German) dated 30 September 1936: "Hier haben wir trotz Winter und Kälte Ruhe und Wärme gefunden" ("Here we have found peace and warmth despite the winter and the cold"). - In 1934, Anna Freud took over the chairmanship of the teaching institute of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Association from Helene Deutsch (who turned her back on Austrofascism the following year and emigrated with her family to the United States) and was also a member of its board. In February 1937, together with Burlingham and Edith Jackson, she opened a day nursery - the Jackson Nursery - on Rudolfsplatz in Vienna, from where the Freuds and Dorothy Burlingham emigrated to London via Paris at Whitsun 1938.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Sigmund Freud (2015) 'Interpreting Dreams', UK illustrated edition, published by The Folio Society (from the first printing). This comes with an original handwritten and signed postcard. The book: uses J. A. Underwood's magisterial 2006 translation, which follows the last German edition, the eighth that Freud prepared in his lifetime. It includes ten beautifully enigmatic oil paintings by Gabriella Boyd, an acclaimed artist currently studying for a postgraduate degree at the Royal Academy, and an indispensable introduction from Cambridge professor and psychoanalysis expert John Forrester, written in 2006. The book's production details: Bound in blocked cloth with an inset printed-paper label; set in Sabon with Minion display; 600 pages; frontispiece and 9 colour illustrations; plain slipcase Condition of the book: fine with no flaws whatsoever. The postcard: Autographed and Signed Postcard, 5.75″ x 4.25″ Penned in German, in the hand of Sigmund Freud, and signed as "freud". Dated "Wien 2.X.34" (Vienna 2 October 1934), and mailed to E. Kempster in Lugano Switzerland. Near fine with bold writing and strong vibrant ink. In January 1933, the Nazi Party took control of Germany, and Freud's books were prominent among those they burned and destroyed. Freud remarked to Ernest Jones: "What progress we are making. In the Middle Ages they would have burned me. Now, they are content with burning my books." Freud continued to underestimate the growing Nazi threat and remained determined to stay in Vienna, even following the Anschluss of 13 March 1938, in which Nazi Germany annexed Austria, and the outbreaks of violent antisemitism that ensued. This postcard was dated from 1934, during the final years Freud remained in Vienna. In Vienna during the 19th century, the script that was taught in schools was quite different from that in the non-German speaking parts of the world, and different as well from the German script of the present-day. This style of script is known as Kurrentschrift, and it was used in the same way that (some of us) use cursive today. Sigmund Freud, for instance, wrote letters, scribbled analyst's notes and signed his name, in Kurrentschrift. Although Freud is known to have signed his name in other ways, he often signed "freud." The capital and lowercase "F" of Kurrentschrift are very similar in form, but not identical. The letter is shown translated below: "I have received your lovely letter and thank you for it. Yours, Freud" The postcard comes with the necessary paperwork. There is no doubt about the authenticity of the postcard and signature. Sigmund Freud is the father of modern psychoanalyis. 'Interpreting Dreams' or 'Traumdeutung' as it is known in its orginal German title is Freud's most popular work. Although the true first edition in German, published in late 1899, has not sold for almost a decade the book gained popularity and eight edition had been published in Freud's lifetime. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Pp. [453]-60. Original wrappers. Ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" on front wrapper. Ink note "Technique/ I x y z" (?by Ranvier) on front wrapper. Very Good. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY SIGMUND FREUD: "Hommage de l'auteur." The recipient was probably Louis Ranvier, who was the histologist at the Collège de France. The offprint of another paper on neurohistology by Freud--with the same ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" and with an inscription from Freud to Ranvier ("Monsieur le Professeur Ranvier hommage respectueux de l auteur")--supports the view that Ranvier was the recipient of the offprint offered here. When Freud was in Paris from October 13, 1885-February 28, 1886, he met Ranvier at the Collège de France. Later he saw Ranvier at a dinner party given by Charcot. Freud described that meeting in a letter: "A particularly pleasant event for me was the arrival during the evening of M. Ranvier, the famous histologist, who had given me such a friendly reception in the Collège de France. I think he spoke to Charcot about me, and I myself had a pleasant talk with him later. My confidence as a judge of human nature received a considerable boost when he confided in me that he would have liked best to be a professor in a small German university--for instance, Bonn--for in a letter to Paneth I had described him as a 'German university professor badly translated into French' " (Letters of Sigmund Freud, ed. E. Freud, p. 207). Ranvier was one of only two people (the other being Charcot) who invited Freud to a dinner party while Freud was in Paris (Jones, Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 1, p. 188). Grinstein, Sigmund Freud's Writings 30 (1884d). "Freud's full account of his method of staining nerve tissue with gold chloride. . . . An English version of this paper was published in Brain 7 (1884) pp. 86-89, under the title 'A new histological method for the study of nerve-tracts in the brain and spinal cord' " (Norman F6). "In February [Freud] heard that Weigert had invented a new method for staining nervous tissue, so he hastened to send a 'Preliminary Communication' on his own method to the Centralblatt für die medizinischen Wissenschaften, reserving the full account for Pflüger's Archiv für Anatomie und Physiologie [the full account is offered here]. He also got his friend Fleischl to send a paper to Ferrier in London for publication in Brain. . . . He wrote this one in English, but got an American to correct it. Freud was aware of the special difficulty with all such methods, which he pointed out as follows: 'Innumerable methods have been devised by histologists which proved themselves useful only in the hands of their inventors; that is why I have decided to publish even the pettiest directions.' Freud was himself highly pleased with the success of his method. which gave him 'a wonderfully clear and precise picture' of the cells and fibers. It caused some sensation at the time, and demands at once came in for it to be published in Czech, Italian, and Russian. The results of subsequent trials, however, were more variable; in some hands it produced excellent results, in others more uncertain and therefore unreliable ones. Brücke told him his various new methods alone would bring him fame" (Jones, ibid., Vol. 1, pp. 203-04). Shepherd, Foundations of the Neuron Doctrine (ch. 7, "The Nerve Cell Studies of Freud"). Freud reads the manuscript of Moses and Monotheism. A superb signed photograph of Freud at work taken by the Austrian-British psychoanalyst Wilhelm Hoffer (1897-1967), depicting Freud seated at his desk in London. Freud had begun working on his Moses book in 1934 and partly published it in German in 1937. He arrived in London on 6 June 1938, announcing that he wished to continue his biblical studies. (Hoffer also fled Vienna for London about the same time.) Freud finished the book that year and the complete German text in three parts was first published in Amsterdam in March 1939 as Der Mann Moses und die Monotheistische Religion. Freud's English was excellent, but he entrusted the task of translating the book to Katerina (Kitty) Jokl, who had been at school with Freud's daughter, Anna. "In fact, his desire to see the English translation published became his most urgent dying wish" (Freud's Literary Culture, Frankland). Katerina was the second wife of Freud's leading British acolyte, Ernest Jones. The English translation was published by the Hogarth Press in May 1939 (the translation credited to Katherine Jones), Freud dying in September that year. Provenance: although without identifying marks to this effect, a previous owner stated that he had been gifted the photograph by a member of the Jones family, the photograph having been given by Freud to Katerina. In his autobiography Katerina's son, the British novelist, journalist and biographer Mervyn Jones (1922-2010), writes about his childhood and the various traumas of his schooldays, including being psychoanalysed as part of the family business. He describes the affection he felt as a teenager for Freud, a warmth reciprocated by the great man, and the importance of that influence on the entire Jones family. In September 1939, the month of Freud's death, he and his mother left England for New York, not returning until 1942. In 2009 the photograph was in the stock of Lion Heart Autographs of New York City. Original silver gelatin print (112 x 87 mm). Signed by the subject, "Sigm. Freud", across the lighter portion of the photograph. Pencil markings on verso and faint ink processing number "89 030"; traces of album mount. Silvering of the darker parts of the image, else very good. Presented in a dark stained oak frame with museum acrylic glazing.…

The image by Max Halberstadt, Hamburg, 300 x 231 mm, blindstamped at lower left corner. Signed at the lower right. Framed and glazed. The photograph by Max Halberstadt (1882-1940) was taken in the previous year, at a sitting which also yielded one of the most famous images of Freud, standing and holding a cigar. First American edition of last book written and published in Sigmund Freud's lifetime. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To dear Poppy from Uncle Sigm. London 1939." The eldest daughter of Freud's elder brother, Philipp, Pauline "Poppy" FreudÂwas born in 1873 when Sigmund was seventeen years old. Freud visited Pauline and her parents in Manchester, England periodically throughout her childhood and maintained correspondence with Pauline well into her adulthood, visiting her and her husband, Frederick Oswald Hartwig, in London in 1939. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Freud association copies of this magnitude seldom enter the marketplace.     Moses and Monotheism is an in depth examination of the characteristics of monotheistic religion as it developed within both the Jewish and Christian faiths. Freud concludes that the legendary figure of Moses was, in fact, and Egyptian and so brought what would become Judaism to Israel from his native country of Egypt. The book was met with great controversy and "delivered a shock to many of his admirers", according to his contemporary Joseph Campbell. Philosopher Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen wrote that in the book Freud applied to history "the same method of interpretation that he used in the privacy of his office to 'reconstruct' his patients' forgotten and repressed memories.".…

8vo. 2 pp. Printed letterhead Berggasse 19". Rare English-language ALS signed "Freud," one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, personal letterhead, January 15, 1922. Handwritten letter to American journalist William Bayard Hale, in full: "I greatly enjoyed your book, 'The Story of a Style.' I had felt prejudiced against it by your publisher advertising it as a 'psychoanalytic study' of Woodrow Wilson, which designation you yourself disclaim. But there is the true spirit of psychoanalysis in it. You have indeed opened up a new field of analytic research and your first results however incomplete may be correct as far as I can judge them. That kind of a higher and more scientific 'graphologie' is sure to find a broad application in literary criticism. By the article in the Rundschau I learned what kind of a man you are and what your former relations with Mr. Wilson had been. I fully sympathize with you but I think you should not describe your work as a cool scientific study of the man. There is a deep passion behind your investigation, it often betrays itself in your lines and it were a miracle if it did not so. You need not be ashamed of it, yet I cannot overcome my objection that what you have done is a bit of vivisection and that psychoanalysis should not be [used] practiced on a living individual. I therefore submit to you my wish that you should not publish my letter as a whole but should take out of it such passages as you deem convenient; you are invited to correct my grammatical errors and faulty impressions. And now let me add in a purely confidential way: I detest the man who is the object of your study. As far as a single individual can be responsible for the misery of this part of the world he surely is. With the expression of my sincere respect." In fine condition.Freud was deeply affected by World War I in which his sons fought for Austria and dissolved the Austro-Hungarian Empire; he came to hold a deep antipathy, as stated in our letter, towards President Woodrow Wilson. 'The harsh realities of the negotiations at Versailles had converted Freud's limited and fleeting hopes for Wilson into furious dissatisfaction. Freud was not disposed to forgive the American messiah for letting him downIn 1921, he made some of his anger public, disparaging 'the American president's Fourteen Points' as 'fantastic promises' that had found too much credence.' (Freud: A Life for Our Time, Peter Gay).Freud famously collaborated with American diplomat (and fellow Wilson hater) William Christian Bullitt on a psychoanalytical study of Wilson that was first published in Europe in the 1930s but did not appear in the U. S. until 1967. Freud and Bullitt attributed Wilson's diplomacy to religious fanaticism a judgment that no historian has endorsed. Their book was greeted with uniformly hostile reviews, with British scholar A. J. P. Taylor asking, 'How did anyone ever manage to take Freud seriously?'The recipient, William Bayard Hale, was a Boston minister turned journalist who was a writer and editor, known for his keen political analysis on the pages of such high-profile publications as Cosmopolitan Magazine, the New York Times, and the Philadelphia Public Ledger. A friend and advisor to New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson, he penned his 1911 biography Woodrow Wilson: The Story of His Life. After Wilson's 1912 presidential victory, he sent Hale on a diplomatic mission to Mexico that culminated in America's interference in the Mexican Civil War several years later. Shortly thereafter, Hale fell out with Wilson and used his book, The Story of a Style, to harshly attack Wilson's character.Provenance: Ex Forbes Collection; Christie's, New York, November 15, 2005, Lot 173.…
