Freundlich is best known for his attempts to experimentally test the general theory of relativity using astronomical observations based on the gravitational redshift. Freundlich worked as an assistant at the University Observatory in Berlin at the time he published this work. In 1920 he moved to the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam, where he was director from 1921-33.

Translated from the original German by the Australian physicist Henry Brose, this edition features two essays by Brose and an introduction by the British astronomer Herbert Hall Turner. The first English edition, a slim 60-page pamphlet published in 1920, underwent significant expansion in the present second edition, effectively constituting a new book. One of Einstein's close collaborators, Erwin Freundlich (aka Erwin Finlay-Freundlich) was among the first scientists to grasp the implications of the theory of relativity for astronomy and to conduct empirical astronomical tests on Einstein's theory of gravitation. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the 'Einstein Tower,' an astrophysical observatory and laboratory near Potsdam, and was the first to introduce Einstein's work to a broader audience. Seine Untersuchungen galten vorwiegend der experimentellen Überprüfung der Einsteinschen Theorie von der Ablenkung des Lichts durch die Schwerkraft, teilweise in Zusammenarbeit mit Albert Einstein. 1933 wurde Freundlich entlassen. Er emigrierte zunächst in die Türkei, 1937 in die CSR und 1939 nach Großbritannien. Zwanzig Jahre später kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück. Er veröffentlichte u.a. Die Grundlagen der Einsteinschen Gravitationstheorie. (DBE).
