Soft cover. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Art Sketches, Plans Etc (illustrator). 1st. Published to mark the centennial of the re-opening of the Mesdag Panaroma in Holland on its restoration to its original condition this book reveals much about the now little-known Panaroma entertainment concept that was to be found in many cities in Europe and elsewhere in the 19th century. The system was a massive three dimensional effect painting set on the walls of a circular "theatre" and viewed from a central viewing platform, where an optical illusion was created The Masdag (name of supervising painter) was one of the few remaining examples and its restoration was supported by many public and commercial donations. Its panorama painting, of a Dutch seaside community, was applied to 1700 square metres of linen, weighed more than six tons, 120 metres in circumference and 14 metres high. The book is not devoted only to the Masdag, but is a history of the development of the entertainment system and detailed accounts of many of the more notable of these sites. Many themes were presented in these "theatres," including Biblical scenes, ancient and historic cities and settings, notable battles, exploration etc. A fascinating story of a near-forgotten public entertainment. 118 pages, including list of existing panoramas, six colour plates, b/w photos, art, plans, sketches documents throughout. Pictorial colour card covers VG, both lower corners lightly creased, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Scarce.
