Neatly written out on watermarked laid paper. Headed 'Fanny Wilson for fathers funeral | To William Crosbie | 1810'. Eleven entries for the funeral on 1 October 1812, including two plum cakes, '11 Cakes Short Bread'; '2 Gallons Rum' and '2 1/4 ditto Whisky'; '6 Bottles Old Port' and '6 ditto Sherry'. Receipt of payment on 5 November at foot, signed by Crosbie. …

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. SOLE EDITION. Bound in 20th c. boards covered with a liturgical manuscript leaf. A fine, crisp copy with a little light marginal soiling; verso of final leaf also lightly soiled. Illustrated with 2 engraved title pages, a full-page portrait of Cosimo II, and 15 full-paged engraved plates. One of the engravings is signed by Francesco Valeggio (or Valesio) (sculp.) and Philipp Esengren (delineauit.) Watanabe-O'Kelly identifies the second engraver as Filippo Csegtenio [?]. A lavishly-illustrated funeral book describing the obsequies held in Venice for Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1590-1621) and the elaborate décor created for the occasion. The opulent ceremonies were accompanied by music (now lost) by Monteverdi. The ceremony took place on 25 May 1621 in the church of the Dominican Fathers S.S. Giovanni and Paolo and the decorative programme was entrusted to the architect-painter Matteo Ingoli (b. 1587, Ravenna - d. 1631, Venice, of the plague) who made use of the best Venice carvers and plasterers, all mentioned in the work. The beautiful engravings illustrate the funeral ceremony, the interior of the church, the grand catafalque, and the sculptures, paintings and bas-reliefs specially made to celebrate the splendor of the Medici family and its special relationship with the Serenissima Republic. Thousands of candles illuminated the interior and flanked the high altar, giving off such great heat that, had the weather not been unseasonably cool, the crowd would have been very uncomfortable (p. 19) Appended to the description of the funeral and the décor is the funeral oration by the Venetian poet and librettist Giulio Strozzi (1583 -1652), who also delivered the funeral oration for Ferdinando I (d. 1609) and composed sonnets for the visit of Ferdinando II and Giancarlo de' Medici to Venice in 1628. Cicognara also attributes the descriptive text to Strozzi. Cosimo II de' Medici, elder son of Ferdinando I de' Medici and Christina of Lorraine, was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1609 until his death in 1621. He is best remembered as the patron of Galileo, Cosimo's childhood tutor, whom the Grand Duke named court mathematician in 1610. It was in that year that Galileo published his Sidereus Nuncius, announcing the discovery of four moons of Jupiter. He named these moons the "Medicean Stars" in honor of Cosimo and his brothers. "The reign of Cosimo II (1590-1621), despite its brevity, was significant artistically, for he was a zealous collector of paintings in a style as yet unfamiliar to his subjects. The landscapes by Adam Elsheimer, which he imported, made a great impression on Italian artists, as did masterpieces by such Flemish artists as Gerrit van Honthorst, who specialized in candlelit nocturnal scenes. Cosimo also invited to his court such inventive artists as Jacques Callot an Filippo Napoletano."(Knecht). Signed.…

The large, folding plate of the catafalque (51 x 35 cm.) is also in fine condition. An account of the funeral ceremonies for Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (d. 30 Oct. 1723). The ceremonies took place in the basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence on 16 May 1724.The volume offers us a comprehensive and minutely detailed description of the funeral honors and the decorations that had transformed the church of San Lorenzo. Chief among these was the catafalque built by the architect Alessandro Galilei. The engraving of the large panel is the work of Vincenzo Franceschini, after Galilei's design. The second part of the work contains the funeral oration, delivered by Andrea Alamanni. To the façade of the church, draped with black damask, were affixed three large, inscribed plaques, the first of them, celebrating the deeds of Cosimo, featured the arms of the Medici, an allegorical figure of fame, and military trophies. In the four grand niches of the façade were skeletons ("simulacra of death"). Within, the interior was hung with black draperies adorned with woven skulls, the Medici palle, and lilies; the arches were tented, the fabric fringed with white. Paintings were hung along the nave illustrating Cosimo's achievements. These were set within trompe l'oeil that appeared to the viewer to be made of precious metals encrusted with gems. Del Riccio describes and interprets each of these paintings, and includes their mottos. In the course of his description, De Riccio mentions the frescoes by Pontormo that were destroyed a little more than a decade after Cosimo's funeral. The description is dense and comprehensive. All of the above is described within the first nine pages of the account. The description of the interior goes on for another eleven. Seven of those pages are dedicated solely to the description of the enormous catafalque, which is also illustrated by the large folding plate. The final page and a half describe the funeral and the attendees, all of whom are dressed in mourning attire. Among them are the members of the senate, the city magistrates, and ambassadors of foreign nations. Two Medici princesses were also in attendance. Cosimo III (b. 1642) was the sixth and penultimate Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was the son of Grand Duke Ferdinando II (d. 1670), whose parents were Cosimo II (d. 1621) and Christina of Lorraine. Cosimo's son, Gian Gastone de' Medici (d. 1737), who succeeded his father and presided over the funeral ceremonies described in this volume, was to be the last in this distinguished line. Signed. …
