Unique édition, peu commune, de cette présentation à la fois informée et goguenarde du Paris des débuts du Second Empire.La capitale ne comptait évidemment avant l'annexion de 1860 que douze arrondissements communaux, mais la facétie parisienne avait inventé le 13e arrondissement, comme lieu mythique des unions à la colle, non validées par le passage devant le maire (l'expression en a survécu jusqu'à nos jours) : "Circonscription matrimoniale d'un nouveau genre, inventée pour l'usage des intelligences supérieures qui se mettent au-dessus des formalités vulgaires (.). Véritable Protée en matière de domicile politique, le 13e arrondissement n'a ni limites déterminées, ni résidence fixe (.)". First edition. An interesting collection of anecdotes and humour from Paris at the beginning of the second empire. There were only 12 arrondissements in Paris at the time. This thirteenth, was a mythical place "A new kind of matrimonial district, invented for the use of superior intelligences who set themselves above vulgar formalities (.). A true Proteus in matters of political domicile, the 13th arrondissement has neither defined borders nor a fixed residence (.)" Hardback black binding, with label and gilt titles to the spine. In good, fractionally rubbed condition. Provenance: from the collection of the Parisian bibliophile Paul Lacombe (1848-1921) with his bookplate engraved by François Courboin (1865-1926). Internally in good clean condition, with a little darkening to the pages only. 500 pages. 12cm x 7.5cm. .
