This first edition consists of an Index map and 22 double page and 1 single page local maps (with #15 missing from this example). A second edition, expanded to 33 maps, would be issued in 1908.Meticulously detailed, yet offered in a scale that gives a wider overview than Sanborn, Baist's work was quite exceptional for the period.G. William Baist Company of Philadelphia produced these detailed city atlases beginning at the end of the 19th Century. Baist s maps were for real estate title searches and included detailed building, subdivision, infrastructure, and street data. They were beautifully designed and colored, and produced for dozens of U.S. cities, but in small quantities. Unlike the Sanborn Company, the atlases were not widely circulated and are now quite rare on the market.RarityAll States of Baist's atlas of Seattle are rare on the market.OCLC locates the following:1905: Digital examples only (Library of Congress and Seattle Public Library)1908: University of Washington1912: University of Washington; Seattle Public Library; Milwaukee Public LibraryThis is the first example we have offered for sale (1992-2024). Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Fair. Volume 4 of Baist's Real Estate Atlas Surveys of Washington District of Columbia. Complete in Four Volumes (this is volume 4 only). Compiled and Published from Official Records, Private Plans and Actual Surveys. by G.W. Baist Surveyor and Map Publisher. Philadelphia. 1907. Atlas of linen-backed maps.… Hand colored. As you can see from the photos, this volume has endured some wear and tear. No covers - the first page present is the title page. Map number 26 is missing. All the rest -- Index maps plus 26 others -- are present (numbered 1-27). At this point the Atlas is disbound. It's essentially 27 individual maps, suitable for framing and display. Linen-backed paper, toned from age. Remains of leather tabs on the page edges (the protruding parts are gone). Index map is nearly split in half, badly tattered at the fold. Plate 1 also has significant wear at the fold. Plates 2, 3, 4, 5 have some moisture stain on the back (the linen side) but it only barely shows on the front. The middle maps (6-14) are quite clean, both front and back, with only minor fraying at the extreme edges. The bottom of the pile (maps 15-21) have a bit of moisture stain on the back (see photos), but again, it only barely shows through onto the front. The end maps (22, 23, 24, 25) have extensive moisture stains on the back side & on the fronts there are patches that are toned brown from where the moisture has bled through. Map 27 is a half-page map and it's in pretty good shape. The maps measure 23.5 inches tall and 34 inches wide (when they are unfolded). I seem to be allowed to post only 12 photos -- I have many more that I can send, if you'd like to see all the details. I think I'm able to send more photos through the "ask seller a question" feature. Maps are scale 100 feet to the inch. Each structure is identified by number. Neighborhoods, streets, etc all clearly labeled in handsome engineer's hand. Despite wear to edges and even despite damage to the backsides, the maps are quite attractive. Baist's maps are scarce. The atlases were updated many times over the years & most that you will see for sale are the WWII-era editions. I cannot find a volume of the 1907 edition anywhere, at the moment. Reproductions of these maps are readily available for $25-$35 and up, but these are the Originals.
