L'operazione, non facile, di ibridazione intrapresa da Pugliese viene fondata sulla volontà di rispettare e soprattutto rinnovare, al tempo stesso, la trasmissione millenaria di esperienze che si invera nella tradizione artistica. A tal proposito Matteo Pugliese potrebbe senza dubbio ben condividere questa riflessione di Gustav Mahler: "La tradizione è custodire il fuoco, non adorare le ceneri". Così l'artista salvaguarda l'essenza archetipica della modellazione e del fare demiurgico scultoreo con tutta la loro potenza simbolica, ma li innerva di umori contemporanei. Memories with 'special effects', a physically powerful presence, but at the same time intimate, symbolic and transcendental: these are the explosive ingredients of the sculpture of Matteo Pugliese (1969). Research that combines the incomparable sculptural plasticity of Michelangelo, mannerism and Bernini with the make-believe world of comic strips, fantasy films, and role-playing video games which are, after all, deeply rooted in the immortal sources of ancient mythology. This difficult process of cross-breeding performed by Pugliese is based on the desire to respect, and above all, to renew the eternal transmission of life's experience brought to life through art. There is little doubt that Matteo Pugliese shares the thoughts of Gustav Mahler on this subject: "Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire". In this way, the artist has preserved the primary essence of the sculptural modelling with all its symbolic power, but has infused it with a contemporary lifeblood.
