He spent ten years in the Soviet gulag, in Jangijul' transit camp, Aktyubinsk labor camp, the Karlag. He was released in 1952, exonerated in 1957, repatriated to Poland in 1959 and immigrated to the US the following year. His account of the Soviet gulag is one of a small number of such accounts.
