Second Edition. Tall narrow octavo, 7 x 3½ inches. Issued as a volume in the publisher's Pseudonym Library. Bound without covers along with two other works in the same series in pebbled red cloth titled and ruled in gilt on spine. Pp iv., 196; half-title with publisher's monogram and the words Pseudonym Library at foot, verso with list of the first 10 volumes in the Pseudonym Library [ending with this title as No. 10]. This Second Edition appears to be identical with the first edition which was published in November 1891 in both cloth and paper wrappers; as this issue is also dated 1891 it was issued within a month of the First Edition. This copy is bound up with CAVALLERIA RUSTICA And Other Tales of Sicilian Peasant Life by Giovanni Verga (1893, No 29 in the series] and the Anonymously published THE HERB OF LOVE [by G. Drosines]. These later works are both 1st editions, THE HERB OF LOVE is a supernatural tale set on the Greek island of Euboea. Very light fading to spine panel, endpapers browned, early ink name on front free endpaper; a very good, clean copy; quite nice. Yeats' third book and first prose work, "Written when I was very young & knew no better." The first edition of this book has always been very scarce and the Wade Bibliography attributes the figure of 2,000 copies for the first edition (1,644 in paper, 356 in cloth). More recent research has suggested that this figure of 2,000 copies encompasses "at least" both the first and second "editions", it seeming virtually certain that they were printed simultaneously. This second edition is decidedly rarer than copies of the first issue; the 1894 "third edition" is also likely just a binding up of leftover sheets.

Paperback. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). An interesting pair from T. Fisher Unwin"s Pseudonym Library, uniting early prose by Yeats with satirical Russian moral stories in their original paper wraps. In the publisher's original paper wraps.A charming two-volume collection of late-Victorian fiction published by T. Fisher Unwin, comprising:John Sherman and Dhoya (1891) The second edition, issued as number 10 in the Pseudonym Library series. This work brings together two early prose works by W. B. Yeats. John Sherman is a short novel set between the west of Ireland and London, charting the quiet psychological journey of its titular protagonist, while Dhoya, the accompanying novella, leans into Irish mythic and folkloric sensibilities. Makar"s Dream and Other Stories (1892). The first English edition. Published by T. Fisher Unwin and issued as number 13 in the Pseudonym Library series. This collection includes Korolenko's best-known story, "Makar"s Dream," in which the shepherd Makar falls into an enchanted sleep and witnesses a satirical vision of society, alongside additional tales such as "The New Life: A Siberian Story" by F. Volkhovskii. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to wraps at extremities. Spine of "Dhoya" cracked, with binding slightly loosened, but holding. Creasing to spines. Slight discolouration and the odd handling mark to wraps. The odd small closed tar and chip to extremities. Internally, somewhat loosely bound, but holding. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots to fore edges and first and last few leaves. The odd small closed tear and chip to rough cut fore edge, not affecting the text. Good. book.

Condition: Poor. 2nd Edition. Second edition of Yeats's first published extended works of fiction, issued in Unwin's 'Pseudonym Library'. Exceptionally scarce in the flimsy yellow wraps. According to Symons, as quoted by Wade, the edition consisted on two thousand copies, of which 356 were bound in cloth, and the remainder in wrappers, for publication in the second week of November. However, Yeats had copies as early as 1st September, and Unwin sent Henley a copy in the following week. The BL deposit copy (received 13th November), as well as two review copies Teats sent out on 9th November, bore the denotation 'Second Edition' on the title and were also dated 1891. In his introduction to the 1991 edition of this title issued in Macmillan's edition of the Collected Works, Richard Finneran supports the case that the numbers Wade quoted from Symons (i. E. the total edition of two thousand copies) may very well encompass Unwin's first and second editions, and possibly even the third edition of 1892 as well. In regard to the first and second editions, he suggests that "it thus seems virtually certain that, as was to happen with, 'The Wind Among the Reeds', a few years later, the two editions were printed simultaneously, the only difference being the cover and title page". As for the uncommon copies of the third edition he suggests, "it is possible" that these copies as well are included in Symon's citation of two thousand copies. Wade 4. Finneran R. (ed) 'John Sherman and Dhoya' Macmillan, 1991, (pp. Xviii-xix, and xxxi). Wraps very worn with front cover and first signature detached. The text block in otherwise solid, though with some marks to the first few pages and creasing to the title page. [iv], 195pp, [1] pages.

FIRST EDITION. Half title. Uncut in orig. mustard yellow envelope wraps; sl. dusted & marked, spine chipped & split but sound. Wade 4; quoting Symons that the initial print run consisted of 1644 copies in wrappers and 356 in cloth. Despite the disparity in numbers of the two original formats, of the ten copies offered at auction in the last 30 years, six have been in cloth and only four in wrappers. These two stories represent Yeats' only completed attempt at realistic fiction. John Sherman tells the story of a man being torn between two different cities (London and Dublin), and two different women; Dhoya is a mythological tale about the relationship between a fairy and a mortal.

First Edition. JOHN SHERMAN AND DHOYA, Unwin, 1891, first edition, about half the pages have a small section missing at the base of the gutter, else a vg copy in soiled covers. The scarce wraps issue of this title. (While the soft-cover edition of this title was produced in a quantity of about 4 times as many copies as the hard-cover edition, you better believe that the wraps issue is much more difficult to locate).

[Yeats's first book in the US] New York: Cassell Publishing Company, (1891). 2 pp undated ads. Original light lavender linen-grain cloth on flexible boards, lettered in darker lavender. First American Edition of Yeats's third book -- and Yeats's first book to be printed and published in America. Yeats's first two books were MOSADA (Dublin 1886 in wrappers, 14 copies extant), and THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (Kegan Paul in London 1889, 500 copies). Comprising a novella and a short story, JOHN SHERMAN AND DHOYA (no comma) earned Yeats forty pounds at a time when he really needed it. Thirteen years later Yeats wrote that this book was "written when I was very young & knew no better." The UK edition was issued (both in wrappers and in yapped cloth) as the tenth volume in T. Fisher Unwin's "Pseudonym Library"; the US edition, as here, was printed in New Jersey and issued as the tenth volume in Cassell's similarly-sized and similarly-themed "Unknown" Library. The UK and US editions are similar in size and typography, and both editions of this title were issued in November 1891. This is an attractive copy of this fragile, flexible-boards volume; there is essentially no external wear nor soil, and it would be FINE except that the front endpaper is cracked. Very scarce: there are currently ten copies of the first UK edition on the market, but NO other first US edition. Wade 5 (the earliest American edition cited in the Wade bibliography).
