Good copy with small signs of wear. - Playing in the Band is not intended as a history of the Grateful Dead, as a social phenomenon nor as a musical endeavor. To my mind, the most fascinating and most often overlooked aspect of the Dead phenomenon is the sophisticated and unique musical language that has evolved among these players in their two decades together. The Dead sprang from the "Summer of Love," but they are not a "sixties band" preserving the music of a bygone era. They are a progressive ensemble whose ambitious, eclectic, and anarchic method was established in the sixties but whose sound is always being updated, not in response to contemporary styles but to the ever-changing relation- ships between these six very different people. The "dialogue" in this book is for the most part assembled from separate interviews, although some passages actually did come from conversations with more than one subject. My purpose in presenting the Grateful Dead this way is not to create the illusion of six musicians sitting in a room together, but to show the similarities and differences among the band members and allow each to contribute to the whole in his own voice as it is in the music of the Dead rather than impose a single narrative voice over theirs. The lyrics quoted herein are all from Grateful Dead songs, and their sources are deliberately unidentified. Seeing these words outside their usual contexts, the reader may find new angles from which to engage the ideas and images. -D.G. / Contents: Foreword by Phil Lesh -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- The Players -- The Band -- Acid Test -- Crazy Fingers -- Dark Star -- Songwriting -- Recording, Part -- Gigs -- Pigpen -- Keyboards -- Self-determination -- Recording, Part -- Deadheads -- Band, Crew, and Office -- Sources.
