Grönland, 1934: In einer Zeit, als das Eis noch unberührt schien, nahm der junge Augusto an seiner ersten Arktisexpedition mit dem dänischen Geologen Lauge Koch teil. Zwei Jahre später begleitete er seinen Professor Arnold Heim auf… eine bedeutende geologische Expedition in den nahezu unerforschten Himalaya. Sie durchquerten abgelegene Täler und Gletscher bis in die Nähe des heiligen Berges Kailash in Tibet, einem Gebiet, das damals für ausländische Forscher unzugänglich war. Augusto war der erste Geologe, der diese Region erkundete und überquerte die Grenze mit einer Sammlung heiliger Steine und geologischer Funde von unschätzbarem Wert. Nach acht Jahren in Kolumbien, drei Jahren in Trinidad und sieben Jahren im Iran setzte er seine Forschungen 1958 in Ladakh, Nepal und besonders in Bhutan fort. In den Jahren 1980 und 1985 wurde Gansser von Deng Xiao Ping eingeladen, eine geologische Traverse durch Tibet zu unternehmen. Ursula Markus begleitete ihren Vater auf vielen Reisen und recherchiert als Herausgeberin das umfangreiche Bildmaterial für das Buch. Die bekannte Journalistin Ursula Eichenberger beschreibt das bewegte Leben von Gansser.
