Binding is neat and tidy, yet split at the centre. Book leans to the right. Spine well sunned, fading bleeds onto front cover a little. Covers also bear some general discolouratiuon. Garnett was an award winning English writer and publisher of the twentieth century. He received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 'Lady into Fox' (1922). He was a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group.These works are illustrated with wood engravings by his wife, Ray Garnett. With engravings throughout the text in 'A Man in the Zoo' and with a frontispiece to 'The Sailor's Return'. In the original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally, very smart. There is some bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. There is some wear to the cloth in these areas. The spine labels are slightly faded. Beginning foxing to preliminaries, bearing the elegant sepia toned amoral bookplate of Oliver Brett. A Near Fine copy of an interesting book and very good read. In the late 1850's a plain and hearty British sailor returns to England with his wife—the daughter of an African king—and their baby. They establish themselves in a village pub. The sailor tends bar; the alien princess is his cheerful helpmate. The village reaction is to be expected for the times and results in tragedy. This book remains in print today. Short novel relating a plane crash and its aftermath with a subtext of locusts, by David Garnett (1892-1981) author and editor and a member of the Bloomsbury Group, whose autobiography, the Golden Echo, was published in three volumes, 1953-62.
