Leipzig (Promotion 1897), war anschließend an der Zoologischen Station in Neapel tätig und habilitierte sich 1899 an der Univ. Leipzig für Physiologie. 1908 folgte er einem Ruf als o. Prof. an die Univ. Gießen und kehrte 1916 als Nachfolger Ewald Herings an die Univ. Leipzig zurück. Er wurde vor allem wegen seiner experimentellen Tätigkeit bekannt. Er befaßte sich u.a. mit der Physiologie der Sinne, entwickelte Apparate, darunter ein "Photokymographion", und veröffentlichte u.a. Beiträge zur Physiologie der marklosen Nerven (1903).
