The year 1854 is of particular interest as in October the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle occurred, a tragic and spectacular series of events starting in Gateshead in which a substantial amount of property in the two towns was destroyed in a series of fires and an explosion which killed 53 and injured hundreds.
