Le titre des oeuvres et la description bibliographique de chaque vue sont identiques dans les deux éditions, alors que les commentaires ont été rédigés en allemand et traduits en français. 2ème volume, tirage de 500 exemplaires. La présente publication marque le terme d'un travail entrepris dans le but d'établir un inventaire aussi complet que possible de l'estampe topographique du Valais jusqu'à la fin du 19è siècle. Environ 5000 vues ont été enregistrées, cataloguées et reproduites, sans compter les nombreuses rééditions ou copies mentionnées avec renvoi à la première publication ou à l'original dont elles dérivent. La division de l'ouvrage en deux volumes n'était pas prévue à l'origine, mais s'est révélée nécessaire par la suite pour des raisons pratiques avant tout. Vu l'augmentation considérable des publications illustrées durant Ia deuxième moitié du 19e siècle, l'année 1850 avait été choisie comme date limite; elle semblait garantir une répartition équilibrée de la matière entre les deux volumes, et son choix se justifiait aussi par le fait qu'à cette époque commence, avec l'introduction de la photographie, une véritable révolution dans les procédés de reproduction iconographique.
