Se subordinaba así el ejercicio del derecho de propiedad de los bienes materiales al derecho a la vida y,a la existencia, primer derecho humano. El derecho a la vida era una propiedad de todo ser humano, y debía gozar de primacía por encima del derecho a las cosas. La política revolucionaria de los derechos humanos de los jacobinos se atrevió también a abolir la esclavitud en las colonias y apoyar las revueltas lideradas por Toussaint Louverture. La derrota de la revolución con la contrarrevolución del 9 de Ter-midor, impidió que este programa político triunfara. Arthur Rosenberg ya dejó escrito que "la población democrática pobre en Francia había tenido poder de verdad en 1793 y 1794".
