Mathéy studierte Architektur an der TH Budapest, später Malerei, Buchkunst und Graphik an der Staatl. Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin, wo er Meisterschüler von Emil Rudolf Weiß (1875-1942) war. 1916/19 war er auf Veranlassung des Architekten Bruno Paul (1874-1968) hier als Lehrer tätig. 1920 wurde er von Walter Tiemann (1876-1951) als Leiter der Werkstätten für Buch- und Steindruck an die Staatl. Akademie der graphischen Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig berufen und wirkte hier bis 1928. Ein langer Aufenthalt in Griechenland 1929/41 folgte, danach war er als freier Künstler in Berlin tätig. 1953 übernahm er die Leitung des neu gegründeten Klingspor-Museums in Offenbach am Main. 1951 war er für den Entwurf der Briefmarken des legendären Posthornsatzes" verantwortlich und war auch für den Porzellanhersteller Rosenthal tätig.
