Volumes in fine condition with book box with a few surface scuffs only. Facsimile edition of HS St God. 1 of the Dombibliothek Hildesheim and the fragment of Inv Nr M 694 of the Schnutgen Mueum, Cologne. The early twelfth-century English psalter is the most precious manuscript on the Hildesheim diocese, which houses richly decorated liturgical volumes from the days of Bishop St Bernard in its Cathedral library. The probable patron was Geoffrey, Abbot of St Albans and the likely recipient was his associate Christina of Markyate, ascetic and Prioress, whose life forms part of the subject matter. A key text in the twelfth century renaissance in England, the work was created at St Albans and is of particular interest to scholars of the French language as it includes the earliest surviving example of a text containing a substantial piece of literature written in French (the Chanson de St Alexis). Widely considered to be one of the most important examples of English romanesque book production, the manuscript is a triumph of lavish illumination.
