Wer weiss schon, dass 150 Kilo Holz verbrannt werden müssen, um ein Kilo marktfähigen Tabak zu erzeugen, d.h. ein/e Durchschnittsraucher/in alle drei Monate einen Tropenbaum verqualmt? Geschätzte 500.000 Kinder verhungern weltweit im Jahr, wei…l die Eltern das Geld lieber für Zigaretten als für Kindernahrung ausgeben (allerdings sind die Zahlenangaben nicht immer gut belegt). Und die EU zahlt jährlich rund 1 Milliarde Euro an Subventionen für den Tabakanbau, während zugleich Geld für Nichtraucherkampagnen ausgegeben wird. Dieses Buch steckt voll von Argumenten gegen die Tabakkonzerne, von den ausbeuterischen Bedingungen des Anbaus angefangen bis zu den aggressiven Vermartungsstrategien. Der Band ist auch ein guter Beitrag zur Debatte um Rauchverbote, wobei wohltuend auffällt, dass sich die Argumentation des Bandes keineswegs nur auf die - durchaus sehr doppelbödige - Gesundheitsdebatte beschränkt. Vielmehr kommen hier eben wenig bekannte Fakten z.B. hinsichtlich ökologischer Zusammenhänge auf den (Rauch-)Tisch. Sollte jede/r Raucher/in gelesen haben jede/r zweite von ihnen stirbt übrigens an den Folgen des Rauchens - für Raucher/innen ist das Rauchen die mit Abstand häufigste Todesursache -,aber auch für NichtraucherInnen bietet der Band gutes Argumentationsmaterial. The book covers the origin and interactions of gamma rays and neutrons as they affect nuclear measurements and also describes the theory and practice of calorimetry. The book gives a description of many instruments based on these techniques that are applied in the field.Although the basic physics has not changed since PANDA was first published, the last thirty years have seen many advances in analysis methods, instrumentation, and applications. The basic descriptions of the origin and interactions of radiation have been updated and include newer references. There have been extensive revisions of the description of gamma detection methods, attenuation correction procedures, and analysis methods, including for the measurement of uranium enrichment and the determination of plutonium isotopic composition. Extensive revisions and additions have also been made to the description of neutron detectors and to the explanation of neutron coincidence techniques. The chapter on neutron multiplicity techniques is a new addition to this edition. The applications of gamma and neutron techniques have been completely overhauled to remove obsolete systems and to include many current applications.
