Condition: Very Good. Four CDV photographs, 2.5 in. x 4 in., of little people couples taken in the 1860s. Two of the photographs are published, as indicated in printing on the photo's verso, by E. and H.T. Anthony & Co. of New York. These two photographs each show two men and women with dwarfism in wedding garb. One of these has… printed on the front: "The Fairy Wedding Group. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863 by M.B. Brady in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the So. District of New York." The other photo has written on the front: "General Tom Thumb and Wife, Commodore McNutt and Miss Minnie Warren in the identical costumes worn before Emperor Louis Napoleon and the Empress Eugenie at the Palace of the Tuilleries, Nov. 29, 1864." Both of these photos have four autopen signatures printed in ink on the verso: "Compliments of Charles S. Stratton, Livinia Warren Stratton, G.W. McNutt, Minnie Warren." Touch of tanning to CDVs with a couple light spots. Also included are two additional, undated CDV photos of "General Tom Thumb" and his wife. One is published by S. Masury of Boston and features the couple in fomal dress. The other is unlabeled and shows the couple holding a baby. On the verso of the baby picture is written (in modern pencil): "Tom Thumb & his wife & baby (P.T. Barnum borrowed someone else's baby for publicity photo)". The baby photo is faded. Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883), better known by his stage name "General Tom Thumb", was an American with dwarfism who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. Barnum taught Charles comedy routines, and soon the student eclipsed the master with a flair for improvisation. Calling him "General Tom Thumb," Barnum took Charles on tours of the United States. Curious people flocked to see this "man in miniature," often expecting to pity him, and being thoroughly surprised by his humor and charm. Eventually, they toured Europe, where Charles' impersonation of Napoleon became a cultural milestone. Charles came back to America, invested in real estate in the growing area of East Bridgeport, and built a house fitted to his unusual size at the north end of town. He even performed at the White House for President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Meanwhile, his employer, P.T. Barnum, hired a thirty-two-inch high woman named Lavinia Warren Bump, who had already achieved fame on her own as a performer. Charles fell in love immediately. He brought her on the ferry from New York to show her his wealth and power in Bridgeport. She was impressed, and agreed to be married. The wedding was the event of the year, photographed by Matthew Brady and featured in every magazine and newspaper in the nation. The newly married couple went on a three-year "working honeymoon" around the world in which they acted their comic and dramatic routines in 587 cities. (from Bridgeport History Center) George Washington Morrison McNutt (1848 - 1881), better known by his stage name Commodore McNutt, was an American dwarf and an entertainer associated with P. T. Barnum. In 1861, McNutt was touring New England with a circus when Barnum hired him to appear at the American Museum in New York City. Barnum gave McNutt the stage name Commodore McNutt, a wardrobe that included naval uniforms, and a miniature carriage in the shape of an English walnut. McNutt became one of the museum's major attractions. He was in love with Lavinia Warren, another dwarf at the American Museum. Lavinia, however, married General Tom Thumb in a spectacular wedding masterminded by Barnum in 1863. McNutt went to the wedding as Thumb's best man, but resented his place in the show. McNutt toured the world between 1869 and 1872 with the Thumbs and Minnie Warren, Lavinia's sister. They returned to America rich beyond their dreams after appearing before royalty around the world.
