Theologe Georg Michael Wittmann (1760-1833) studierte seit 1778 Philosophie und Theologie in Heidelberg, empfing 1782 die Priesterweihe und wurde 1788 Subregens (1802 Regens) am Regensburger Klerikalseminar, womit eine Professur am Lyzeum verbunden war. 1804 wurde er Dompfarrer, 1829 Weihbischof, 1830 Generalvikar und 1832 Bischof von Regensburg. Nachdem die Einleitung des päpstlichen Informativprozesses irrtümlich verzögert worden war, verzichtete Wittmann 1833 wegen einer schweren Erkrankung. Als Seelsorger erwarb er sich Verdienste vor allem um die Jugenderziehung und die Caritas; als einer der Führer der Restaurationsbewegung kämpfte er gegen den Geist der Aufklärung.
