This battered but determined little volume of Herodotus Book I , edited by George A. Sheets for the Bryn Mawr Commentaries series, has clearly seen more than one exam season and probably heard the phrase ?you should have translated this over the holidays? more times than you or I care to imagine. Once proudly stamped and shelved at Old Palace School in Croydon , it has now been demoted to the eccentric afterlife of second-hand classics ? and rescued by Crappy Old Books , where all slightly tragic but loveable volumes come to retire. Physical State of the Artifact Condition: Fair , in the honest, non-eBay sense of the word. The inner cover hinge has been repaired with new stiff paper to keep the cover attached ? a proper, functional mend, not an Instagram craft project. Copy is very worn , which we prefer to think of as richly handled by generations of students who may or may not have done the reading . Binding is good ? it opens, closes, and holds pages together like a book that still has some self-respect. Patina: excellent. It was written primarily for use by under- graduates in their second or third year of Greek, although perhaps even more advanced students may find it worth consulting in con- nection with linguistically difficult passages. The commentary is based on the text of C. Ilude's third Oxford edition (1927). Lem- mata are cited by numbered section. Herodotus wrote in a literary "Ionic" dialect which is strongly influenced by the language of Homer. For most students who use this commentary the different dialect will be unfamiliar. The adjust- ment to it is not difficult, however, and the commentary seeks to assist in the process by glossing lonic features with their Attic equivalents. Such glosses, which take the form "X" (an Ionic fea- ture) = A. "Y" (its Attic equivalent), are very numerous at the beginning of the commentary, less frequent thereafter. A brief biog- raphy of Herodotus and a synopsis of the more conspicuous lonic features will be found below. An earlier draft of this commentary was pilot-tested by Prof. Gregory W. Dickerson in two of his classes at Bryn Mawr. In its present form the commentary owes much to his many valuable suggestions.
