Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history and potential of kites, exploring their evolution from simple toys to powerful tools capable of revolutionizing travel and maritime endeavors. The author traces the development of kites, highlighting their early uses in scientific experimen…ts and their potential for practical applications. The book then introduces the innovative "Buoyant Sail," a patented kite design with remarkable capabilities. These kites can be easily folded and transported, and their power can be readily adjusted, making them ideal for various purposes. The author describes how these kites can serve as auxiliary sails for ships, provide crucial assistance in cases of shipwreck, and even facilitate daring expeditions across vast deserts. Moreover, the book envisions the use of kites for exciting new forms of travel and sport. The "Charvolant," a specially designed carriage drawn by kites, promises a thrilling and efficient way to traverse land and water. The author recounts exhilarating races and journeys made possible by this unique invention, highlighting the speed, convenience, and sheer joy of kite-powered travel. Ultimately, this book challenges our preconceptions about kites and reveals their potential to transform various aspects of our lives. By showcasing the ingenuity and possibilities of kite technology, the author invites us to imagine a future where the power of the wind can be harnessed in extraordinary ways. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In contemporary black half calf with green marbled boards, titles and decorative tooling to black leather label to upper cover, gilt tooling, corners and edges bumped and worn. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, date to base, worn at joints. Internally, green marbled endpapers, front…is, titlepage withing double ruled borders, all other pages within single ruled border, (xxvii), [2], 4-90 pp, 22 illustrations (engravings in outline and woodcuts), printed by Harrison and Co. St Martins Lane, London, oblong 40*27 cm. Some light marginal water staining. (1939 Brit. Museum Cat 1871c22) One of the most popular books ever printed, The Pilgrim's Progress was composed by Bunyan partly as a distraction from 'worser thoughts', partly to allegorize his religious experience as a guide for others, and partly to add his voice to the great debate over conscience that raged especially between 1667 and 1672. Christian's experience at Vanity fair echoes Bunyan's at the hands of Restoration magistrates and judges. More broadly, Bunyan drew on his military experience to craft an epic that creatively combined warfaring and wayfaring. Christian is both pilgrim and warrior, and the message of The Pilgrim's Progress is not only a call to embrace and persist in the Christian life, but also a summons to battle the forces of evil, if necessary by refusing to yield to the state's demands for religious conformity. Most of the work was probably in hand by autumn 1669, when Bunyan enjoyed modest liberty, and the rest was probably composed by early 1671. See ODNB. SELOUS Henry C [Courtney] 1803-1890 (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Fair / Good. No Dustjacket. One inch thick. This is a difficult book to describe as it appears to be a bound together set of short plays (some one act plays even) - by the looks of the paper and printing it looks early 19th century. I have photographed all the title pages and uploaded them as photographs. I… can supply pictures of the title pages I didn't have room to upload on this listing. The hardback binding comprises a plain leather(?) spine which is rubbed, scratched and has pieces missing to the top - the spine-junctions are a darker brown which suggests the spine has been sun-faded to a chipped, lighter brown. There is a short piece of scribble to top right of front board. The page-edges are rough-cut and browned and the page-margins are lightly browned but are clean and tidy. Amongst the plays are unrelated contents pages and some reviews of actors and there are rather crudely coloured-in plates.

Quarter-brown cloth over brown boards, printed label on front cover (minor shelfwear, slight rubbing), still NF copy, from the library of Otto C. Winzen (1917-1979), pioneering German-American aeronautical engineer, was interned during World War II, and later signif…icantly advanced material and construction of high-altitude balloons after World War II. First facsimile edition, 1 of 95 copies printed, of this curious treatise detailing how Pocock achieved nearly 20 miles per hour while driving his Charvolant, a kite-hauling carriage, from Bristol to Marlborough in 1827. Pocock was an aviation pioneer who conducted experiments on the use of kites, how to lift, draw, and move items by using kites, and finally capped it with his huge kites drawing the Charvolant. One of Pocock's giant kites still exists in the Museum of Bristol, a BBC team recreated and flew the kite successfully in 2009, and in 2009, Takeshi Sugimoto of Kanagawa University determined that as long as the carriage was not exposed to the wind, and kites were aloft, they did produce sufficient lift to offer steady driving speeds for the carriage.
