This book delves into the fascinating history and potential of kites, exploring their evolution from simple toys to powerful tools capable of revolutionizing travel and maritime endeavors. The author traces the development of kites, highlighting their early uses in scientific experiments and their potential for practical applications. The book then introduces the innovative "Buoyant Sail," a patented kite design with remarkable capabilities. These kites can be easily folded and transported, and their power can be readily adjusted, making them ideal for various purposes. The author describes how these kites can serve as auxiliary sails for ships, provide crucial assistance in cases of shipwreck, and even facilitate daring expeditions across vast deserts. Moreover, the book envisions the use of kites for exciting new forms of travel and sport. The "Charvolant," a specially designed carriage drawn by kites, promises a thrilling and efficient way to traverse land and water. The author recounts exhilarating races and journeys made possible by this unique invention, highlighting the speed, convenience, and sheer joy of kite-powered travel. Ultimately, this book challenges our preconceptions about kites and reveals their potential to transform various aspects of our lives. By showcasing the ingenuity and possibilities of kite technology, the author invites us to imagine a future where the power of the wind can be harnessed in extraordinary ways. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, date to base, worn at joints. St Martins Lane, London, oblong 40*27 cm. Some light marginal water staining. (1939 Brit. Museum Cat 1871c22) One of the most popular books ever printed, The Pilgrim's Progress was composed by Bunyan partly as a distraction from 'worser thoughts', partly to allegorize his religious experience as a guide for others, and partly to add his voice to the great debate over conscience that raged especially between 1667 and 1672. Christian's experience at Vanity fair echoes Bunyan's at the hands of Restoration magistrates and judges. More broadly, Bunyan drew on his military experience to craft an epic that creatively combined warfaring and wayfaring. Christian is both pilgrim and warrior, and the message of The Pilgrim's Progress is not only a call to embrace and persist in the Christian life, but also a summons to battle the forces of evil, if necessary by refusing to yield to the state's demands for religious conformity. Most of the work was probably in hand by autumn 1669, when Bunyan enjoyed modest liberty, and the rest was probably composed by early 1671. See ODNB.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair / Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. One inch thick. This is a difficult book to describe as it appears to be a bound together set of short plays (some one act plays even) - by the looks of the paper and printing it looks early 19th century. I have photographed all the title pages and uploaded them as photographs. I can supply pictures of the title pages I didn't have room to upload on this listing. The hardback binding comprises a plain leather(?) spine which is rubbed, scratched and has pieces missing to the top - the spine-junctions are a darker brown which suggests the spine has been sun-faded to a chipped, lighter brown. There is a short piece of scribble to top right of front board. The page-edges are rough-cut and browned and the page-margins are lightly browned but are clean and tidy. Amongst the plays are unrelated contents pages and some reviews of actors and there are rather crudely coloured-in plates.

4to. [2], 51, [1] pp. Illustrated title, w/ vignette, 3 plates. Quarter-brown cloth over brown boards, printed label on front cover (minor shelfwear, slight rubbing), still NF copy, from the library of Otto C. Winzen (1917-1979), pioneering German-American aeronautical engineer, was interned during World War II, and later significantly advanced material and construction of high-altitude balloons after World War II. First facsimile edition, 1 of 95 copies printed, of this curious treatise detailing how Pocock achieved nearly 20 miles per hour while driving his Charvolant, a kite-hauling carriage, from Bristol to Marlborough in 1827. Pocock was an aviation pioneer who conducted experiments on the use of kites, how to lift, draw, and move items by using kites, and finally capped it with his huge kites drawing the Charvolant. One of Pocock's giant kites still exists in the Museum of Bristol, a BBC team recreated and flew the kite successfully in 2009, and in 2009, Takeshi Sugimoto of Kanagawa University determined that as long as the carriage was not exposed to the wind, and kites were aloft, they did produce sufficient lift to offer steady driving speeds for the carriage. A lovely morocco bound second edition copy of this very scarce volume by George Pocock, detailing his aeropleustic science and his designs for the Charvolant. A very scarce work. The second edition of this work.Illustrated with a folding plate, and six plates. All plates are present. The folding plate depicts the patent kite and Charvolant. The other plates show a shipwreck being saved by a kite, a group of children being dragged into water by a strong kite, a successful sail from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight, Charvolants travelling in different directions by the same wind, a steersman dashing boldly out upon the turf, and a woman shouting that a kite hit the board outside her shop.Collated, bound without the advertisement leaf to the rear. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. An important work on aerial navigation and the aeropleustic science, particularly through the means of kites.George Pocock invented the 'Charvolant', a kite drawn carriage, the design and usage of which is detailed in this work.Pocock patented the design of his Charvolant buggy in 1826, after many experiments from which he concluded that kites were capable of lifting the weight of humans - he often conducted experiments on his children to test this theory. In this work Pocock details that the buggy was able to go to twenty miles an hour over considerable distances. On one occasion, a Chavorlant overtook the coach of the Duke of Gloucester, a large breach of etiquette. The author was the grandfather of W. G. Grace, a famous cricketer who was important in the development of the sport, and is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers of all time.Curiously this second edition relates a story in Pocock's voice in which his family proposed a visit to London in the summer of 1846, but Pocock died in 1843.Plates are by Rose Gilbert after David Cox Junior. Very scarce publication with only 7 recorded in international libraries. George Pocock (1774 1843) was an English schoolteacher, the founder of Tent Methodism and an inventor, particularly known for having invented the 'Charvolant,' a kite-drawn carriage. Pocock was interested in kites from an early age, and experimented with pulling loads using kite power, gradually progressing from small stones to planks and large loads. He taught at a school in Prospect Place, Bristol and continued his experiments with his pupils. By 1820 he had determined that in combination they could support considerable weight and began experimenting with man-lifting kites. In 1824, he used a 30-foot (9 m) kite with a chair rig to lift his daughter, Martha (the future mother of cricketer W.G. Grace) over 270 feet (82 m) into the air. Later the same year and continuing to use his family as subjects, he lifted his son to the top of a cliff outside Bristol; his son briefly dismounted from the chair at the top of the 200-foot (60 m) cliff and then concluded the test by releasing a clip on the kite line which allowed him to slide down the line in the chair and return to earth. Having concluded that kites were capable of lifting humans, he turned again to experimenting with them as a way of pulling loads, this time as a method of pulling vehicles. Using kites in various arrangements he determined that a small number of large kites were capable of pulling a carriage with passengers. In 1826, he patented the design of his "Charvolant" buggy. This used two kites on single line 1,500 to 1,800 feet (457 459 m) long to provide enough power to draw along a buggy carrying several passengers at considerable speed, similar to the modern sport of kite buggying. In his book, The Aeropleustic Art or Navigation in the Air by the use of Kites, or Buoyant Sails, Pocock records that it performed at the rate of 20 miles an hour (32 km/h) over considerable distances and that a mile could frequently be covered even over heavy roads in 2¾ minutes. A group of three Charvolants made a trip of 113 miles (182 km) together, and on a run between Bristol and Marlborough one of the buggies sailed past the mail coach, which at the time was the fastest passenger transport.
