Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Deluxe limited edition of Baudelaire's most famous work, #8 of 80 copies printed on Japon paper. 292, [6] pp., publisher's prospectus bound in at rear. Illustrated with 27 illustrations drawn by Georges Rochgrosse and etched by Eugene Decisy, including handcolored vignette to title page, 20… full-page illustrations in three states, and 6 head-pieces in three states (three prints taken from the same block, the first in an early stage of its development). Bound in publisher's self-wraps with textured cream overwraps, title page reproduced on front panel. Near Fine with light soiling to wraps, creasing and several short repaired tears to spine, and very faint dampstaining to lower edge, impinging slightly on margins. Several pages unopened. A decadent edition of Baudelaire's decadent work, published in the late flowering of the Book Beautiful movement. Rochgrosse's exquisite etchings fully capture the eroticism of sin, and his horned and goat-footed Lucifer vies with Le genie du mal for beauty. Copies in the original temporary wraps are rare.
